Last night I was riding my Blast on the last mile of a 15 mile round trip in the rain. This was my first time on a legit ride in the rain, and was consciously cautious.

I was on San Martin Dr in Baltimore, MD: a really curvy, low traffic road that snakes around Johns Hopkins University. There's a very poorly placed granite (read: Slick) sidewalk at the apex of the 2nd turn in a tight-to-wide S curve. Even when I'm driving at the speed limit (25), in dry conditions, in my Subaru Impreza, my back end slips out on that damn granite.

Anyway, I was slow passing the granite and got back on throttle to take an uphill right turn. On throttle, off rear traction. The rear quickly slid out behind me to the left til I was almost 180 around and I ditched it. Dusted off some dignity, picked it back up and eventually got her going and rode to destination.

Damage:
Bent front brake lever, roughed up right handlebar end and foot peg.

Burned a hole in my right cheek pocket. Yes, jeans do disintegrate and I was under 25 mph. My leather wallet stopped the road from reaching my flesh.
Icon Accelerant jacket took a hit to the right forearm and elbow. Almost no damage whatsoever and I barely felt it.
Little hole in the thumb of my glove.

Conclusion:
I'm adding leather pants to my gear before I take any serious trips or start riding at high speeds and now I've got more respect for riding in the rain. I've exclusively owned 5-speed awd Imprezas since I turned 16, 7 years ago, and grew up in Buffalo, NY, so I've got inclement weather experience..That said, 1 wheel drive motorcycles are not awd rally cars. ;)

Sorry to hear about this bro, if there is one thing Buellxb.com has taught me (there are many more then just one of course)it Leather pants are the way to go. I need to run and pic some of those puppies up after the first of the year...

Write your state legislature about that granite though.... some planners are freaking idiots

It's JHU trying to beautify the area without thinking about the utility of their changes at all. Luckily the street is very wide on that turn (it's narrow everywhere else), so there's some sliding room.

I must say, downing the bike, albeit at a slow speed, wasn't scary. It was more like "well here i am, either i try to save this and possibly high side or just go down.....i guess we're going down."

glad to hear you're ok... leather ftw. also might want to look into some reinforced jeans. i know icon, Shift (i love mine), draggin, and some others make some great kevlar reinforced pants specifically for riding

Glad your all right, the saying goes if you ride a motorcycle. There are two types of riders, those that have been down and those who will go down.

honestly i'm kind of glad it happened the way it did...without oncoming traffic and at low speed. i never had a dirtbike as a kid (quads and for a short period of time an extremely flippable 3 wheeler) so i really haven't laid down any vehicle before.

how exactly do you figure out the limit to which you can lean your bike without going down? i know it's a newbie question but hell, i've only been riding for just over 2 months! (and due to weather only a couple dozen times)

just be happy this didnt happen to you

Everyone's got an opinion on this. This is mine.

Ride at a speed that you are comfortable with in the twisties. Your speed will dictate the lean angle needed and your body will figure it out naturally. Do the majority of your braking before dropping in. Force yourself, if you're not already in the habit, of looking at the "exit" of the curve (once this is 2nd nature is when things will really start to click).

Go at your own pace, don't try to drag your knee in every turn. Guys that have been riding for years are doing it naturally by now, you're not yet. But it will come quickly. Above all, wear your gear and ride safe. :)[up]

gee EVLXB howd ya guess, yup no gloves no jacket no helmet just a dago tee plus an extremly hot n humid day in july and a tire blowin out . a nice recipe for disaster. just my shitty luck.

don't take this the wrong way - but shitty luck had nothing to do with the the beaten you took.... the tire blow-out - yes.
