Drummer Or Hawk

Buellxb Forum

I think Hawk is louder but the Drummer has a great deep tone. From all the sounds of the Hawk, they seem to have a "raspy" pitch. Drummer has been dyno numbers on the stock ECM too.

I researched both and spoke with both guys before I bought. While the if cost is your MAIN concern Hawk will work. I went with the DrummerSS because he had data to back up the design on my model and the craftsmanship is incredible. Its stainless inside and out so no concern of rusting out. And he bake the black on so it looks SHARP. So I would say spend the money go with the DrummerSS.

One thing that rarely is discussed regarding the Drummer SS is that you have your stock core and chin fairing to sell. I sold my stock pipe on ebay for $150 plus got another $45 for the chin fairing. $675 less $195.00 for parts sold = $480.00, you end up with the SS which never needs to painted, every Hawk pipe I every saw in person (3 in total) all needed to be painted, all had surface rust on it. The surport you get from Kevin is also great. I also won best sounding bike at a local bike rally, really pissed off the Harley guys!

While the Drummer SS sounds awsome I will say this......IT WILL EVENTUALLY NEED REPACKING! Im in a position right now with mine that if I dont send it to Kevin and pay Roughly $100+ to have him redo it....I will have to peice together the stuff to do it. No one sells a kit for these mufflers. Bristol Core...Kevins supplies dealer... Has proven to me in the last week that they have no intrest in providing the DIY'er the matirials to do it at home (eventhough they admit to selling the exact same materials at a cost that is half of what Kevin charges). They push you back towards Kevin. I do have a plan and I hope it works, but I am considering selling mine and going with a Hawk.

This is info I felt everyone needs to know. The cost above is for the older style drummer SS that can be taken apart........I hate to see what the charge will be for his new welded SS mufflers.

The paint issue is a easy fix, I have a hi temp gloss black painted hawk and it looks amazing to me, the only other pipe I would think about going to would be Keda.

repacking of the SS hasn't been an issue, 8,500 miles, 2 years of riding hasn't even made it any louder. It made it thru my total loss without a blemish, had deer guts all over it, stainless shined up like new, The SS was one of the reasons I bought salvage back, it added some value back in the busted up bike.

Just wait........ Im just pissed about it being such a headache to get the proper packing without selling a kidney. The new packing he is using may last longer especially if you got the new core wrap, but it will happen eventually.

The Drummer SS is by far(cost Not included)is Track Tested and Kevin uses different mufflers of course for whatever the track is. For the Street my choice is the Stainless Steel due to small upkeep and sounds plenty loud enough that I designed a small side pipe add on and had it powder coated. Looks good and the sound is somewhat behind me as well.Plus it hasn't affected the lean ability to my right very much. Usually with good care the Drummer won't need repacking as long as you break it in properly and during the first 100,miles or so it should last over 30,000.miles or more before repacking would be needed. Everybody has a favorite. Ride Safe.*Jimi [up][cool]

Everyone is entitled to an opinion..... I just know that Im on my 2nd repack. It was packed once right after I bought it (used) because it had no packing in it.<------Im sure it had lesss than 30,000 miles on it. This is the second Im working on.......
The first pack job lasted maybe 2000 miles. I love the sound and performance of the muffler, but this is just a pain in the ass as of right now.

jimijeans......I have never seen a fiberglass packing last 30,000 miles in any aplication. Heat and vibration destroy fiberglass fibers over time, and the last time I checked a Buell has both of those by the boatload. The stainless wool wraped around the core is just a bairier to help slow the deteriation process........

There is a new option for the Drummer SS packing also. Its pretty much indestrucable. Forget the name right now,

It's made by Bristol Core And is a stainless wool backed by 304 stainless mesh. The mat is at most 1/4 inch thick. The packing used is Bristol Cores Eglass mat. I've talkEd with a rep already and know what is used. Also mentioned was that the core wrap only slows the deteriaton process......... It does not stop it. Plus.... Unless you pay extra for the core wrap...it does not come standard in every muffler Kevin makes. If Bristol Core will respond to my inquiry I could get the same materials for half of what he charges to send it to him.

It all depends on how you break in an Exhaust how many Rev it right up and barrel it out the gate loving the sound. I put over 250miles on mine before I even reved up the Engine hard.
Yep most will BE repacking due to over reving just to hear it sound off, especially when new. And I have an 2006 Buell right here in my shop with 33,477.miles on it and the Drummer SS is still in good shape. Unless you want to,
Never needs painting and as long as you use it right in the Beginning the Oval Style Drummer SS only [NOT] the stock Can will last longer than most will own it.Stainless disapates heat better. Yes Heat issues and some Vibration somewhat play a role in Repacking.
Especially some of the cheaper and lighter brands. I have in the 30 plus years of working on Bikes had to repack many of the Cheaper Mufflers and The Big Twins don't have the worry at all.
AND yes I did pay Extra for Kevins packing so as not to worry about it for a while Xtreme is Correct thats is why Since I live here in N.C. I have been in his shop more times than fingers & toes and have learned how good he can do if you pay for the Quality for a long lasting product. Most times we are all on Major Budgets, just because you haven't seen it does not mean it can't be done. Usually the Bills & Wallet plays a role on that.Ride Safe.*Jimi[cool]

Apologie's to all........ I love my drummer SS....Im just a lil ticked at the lack of avalible supplys for the DIY'ers.

jimijeans......I havent heard or seen the bike in your shop so I really have no say in the condition of the muffler. I will say that When I received mine it was used and I had no clue of the mileage on it or how it was treated......what I saw from mine was that it had 2 snake paths on the bottom where the packing had burnt out and the cage was loose.

My reasons for not wanting to send Kevin my muffler are....
1. I can get the same materials from Bristol Core for half of what he wants to charge me to do it in his shop.
2. I work in the oilfeild and im gone for 30-45 days at a time.....my time at home is limited to 2 weeks and I only get at most 2 days to ride the rest is spent with my family. I dont want to miss out on riding because I had to ship out my pipe for somthing Im capable of doing myself.

Tomorrow I will call Bristol Core insted of email and see if I can get what I need. The guy Ive been emailing isfull of great info......I just think he is lacking a bit in his customer service practices.

I would love to see 1st hand how Kevins shop operates and have major respect for the man. It would be nice if he would offer a kit for the DIY guys with his older SS cans that come apart. He says its harder than it seems and there is a proper way to do it, but Im having a hard time seeing how it could be so hard.

make your own, i did and it cam eout great sounds awesome, no noticable loss in torque or power and it took 5 hours and like 40 dollars in sheet metal and exhaust packing.

Just did a side by side comparison with the hawk and drummer ss today. the drummer is louder, but not much. It is better quality, but three times as expensive. I have the hawk and I am still happy with it. Plus it is easier to pain a hawk than repack a drummer. Just get what you want and you will like it.
