Like the styling for being different, but for some reason feel that any collision hitting the front of the bike high or low speed seems extra painful with the location and protrusion of those gauges. I have had the misfortune of a tank and groin collision, so maybe it's just me...

Yes, and that doesn't seem to be a practical location for ease of reading the gauges while sitting on the bike or riding. Of course a lot of custom stuff is not done for "practicality"....it's done for the "art" of it, the uniqueness, etc.
