Ok buelligans... I gotta little bone to pick with the rock star... Went to get some new rubber mounted on my rims, Tanya from Robs Powersports on Johnsons Creek WI said the bearings were notchy.

Long story ~ short the wheel bearings in the XB models are completely irreconcilably difficult to remove. Another long story ~ short, my dad and myself spent a good amount of time stabbing (yes stabbing) the wheel bearings with a Dremmel Tool in much vanity until finally getting it to eject.

What is this all aboot??? Why the exaspirating ordeal of engineering concerned herein?

Love my 03 XB9S though... Just wanted to seed my experience ~

...Erik said XBs are to be mute... ...but... He also engineered that wheel and bearing and belt tensioner debacle, ho hum, I s'pose I can find better things to do with $300 than tinker with a perfectly breathing 984cc sexy mo sheen...

Well... Go Pack!

Why the hell were you using a dremel tool to get your bearings out??? A bearing puller from harbor freight costs $50 tops, I just use a deadblow hammer and a punch tool???

You know if you follow the manual and torque everything to spec correctly your bearings will be fine. If you don't have fancy sealed bearings avoid spraying them with water directly as well. That's just good practice.

apparently you have little experience in the motorcycle "bearing and hub" world. there is absolutely nothing new or odd or unusual about a front or rear XB wheel. it is a common bearing pressed into a standard depth and width hub pocket with a floor in same. all completely normal in the cycle world. fronts removable in short order using basic home-shop tools....rear more challenging but completely do-able by the novice. rear pair removal problem because you can't get ahold of sufficient inner race "lip" to engage puller or long punch? simple. remove grease seal...knock out cages...knock out inner race...remove spacer...reinstall balls and inner race....now go to opposite side and punch out bearing you just worked on.
and "belt tensioner debacle"? i have owned 15 assorted XB models to date and have accrued well over 60,000 miles of XB saddle time and never had a single belt or tensioner failure. but that's me.

Ah young padawan. You have slipped to the darkside.

oh yeah, how the **** do you "spent a good amount of time stabbing (yes stabbing) the wheel bearings with a Dremmel Tool"?

The right tool for the job is painless, or hammer and blunt object (for me a 15in 3/8 snap-on extension with broke tip) works wonders, as lunatic describes above

A blind bearing puller is a great investment. Use it on your car. Your boat. Your Cat. You wife it doesn't matter, it just pulls the bearings with ease. Aren't you tired of having bearings explode and your BALLS go all over the place only for your stupid cat to swallow one and cost you $1400 in surgery to remove? Then look no further than a blind bearing puller!

:applause:

Sounds like ya should have spent an extra 5 minutes googling how to remove the wheel bearings prior to engaging in an attempt. FWIW, I had to cut one of my rear bearings out too, but I had the entire front and rear job done in under an hour.

Hmmm... I will call my dad and see why he (we) didn't use a bearing puller... But from what I saw, there's no easy way to remove the rear bearings....Thanks for the clues mates!

Ohhh... Don't the belt tensioners cause mucho bearing problems? Heard this from multiple Buell fans...

Done 3 sets on xbs this month.

Its not that bad. Autozone, blind pulley remover rental. Some heat. Put new bearrings in freezer. Done.

Getting the balls and inner ring out was easy enough. The Dremmel tool was used to slice the outer ring in one spot and then use a hammer and screwdriver to confangle it out... Bearing pullers work? Anyone currently changing their rear bearings and using a bearing puller should upload a video...

The XB's eat up rear bearings MrLogix, because, unlike chain driven cycles, the belt tensioner stresses the bearings out... admittitedly, this doesn't happen until (in my case) after 20K miles... But, it does make sense...

I know about the stresses from a belt drive. I have an 1125R (more power and torque) and ride like a heathen idiot (wheelies, hard accel out of turns), just replaced mine front and rear. Will replace them at 10k mile intervals. Like I said, regular maintenance. Bearings are cheap enough.

Yea, I agree with what’s been said in the replies.

In my experience, there’s nothing peculiar about the XB’s wheel bearing design, nor is there anything about the belt-drive that causes significantly higher bearing failure rates than you’d find with a typical chain-drive sport bike.

I don’t think the personal slight against Erik is warranted either.

I think you should sell your bike if that is how YOU remove a simple bearing. There are tools to make the job easy. :applause: ^^^^^^^^^^ and that is the tool.

Dieses ganze Zeug hilft nicht die Bohne, wenn der Lagerkäfig zerstört ist. Dremel und Meissel sind dann die Mittel der Wahl.
