Has anyone ever heard of a "broken pipe" error?

I was riding and the bike definitely felt different, it had no power and could not get above 4000rpms. It felt like someone was trying to hold be back as I tried to go faster. The check engine light came on after about 2 miles, I pulled over and checked ECM Droid (I was also logging), when I click read codes, no codes pop up but the words "broken pipe" flash at the bottom of the screen. When I got home and check the codes again after turning the bike off, I got code 13, "rear O2 inactive" in the stored codes section, nothing in the current codes section.

I had just cleaned the Intake Air Control Sensor ( http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-For...tyX-XB12Scg/Cleaned-Intake-Air-Control-Sensor ) and had issues with backfiring which I think I resolved by tightening the velocity stack clamp ring.

I also just replaced and calibrated a new (after market) Throttle Position Sensor, part# TPS4129 from AutoZone.

I've been having issues with this bike for a while now, but this is all new.

Why is the universe against me?!

I think I am just going to take it to HD.

Any advice would be great.

Stock exhaust or aftermarket?

My 09 XB12Ss runs well, just some popping on decel w/ an aftermarket pipe and EBR race ecu. I also get a "broken pipe" msg when I use ecm droid ( no check engine light)

I figured it was some junk code from not recognizing the exhaust valve actuator or something....

Stock exhaust or aftermarket?

I have a Drummer SS, I know that actuator still moves around (on top of the air box) even though it's not connected to anything but I've never seen, or noticed the "broken pipe" message.

It's good to hear you see it also.

The Drummer SS has been on the bike for a while before all these issues started.

Herrlich.
Ihr wisst aber schon, was eine pipe in Android ist?
Und warum solche pipes "brechen"?

I am running a Termignoni "race" exhaust which is a rare exhaust here in the states (only about 5 or so are being used)

We arent sure what "broken pipe" even means when we pull the codes.

I am using ECM Droid to try to data log and get the popping on deceleration to go away and get a little smoother/progressive throttle response.

Unfortunately either I never started logging or ECM Droid crashed because the ride I was on did not log (when the check engine light came on). It has been cold here lately so I will have to wait for it to warm up to get more data.

Saturday and Sunday was sunny and 75degF, Monday and Tuesday there has been rain and snow and 25degF. You gotta love central NY

Where in CNY are you? I'm from Ithaca originally but live out west now

Also, where did you buy your bluetooth module? I just got an email from the ebay seller I got mine from for a recall. They werent getting the proper voltage. That could be your issue w/ the failed data log.

I'm in Oswego, but spend a lot of time in Rochester too.

I got the bluetooth from xopti, its very possible I forgot to start logging. Once it warms up here again I will take it out and see if it happens again. I've never had any issues with the transmitter.

Should I consider buying the EBR ECM? I have the Drummer SS with a K&N air filter but stock ECM. I am definitely not hitting the track or anything, but would it be good the have the ECM programmed for my bike?

And should the Drummer SS exhaust work with the stock ECM?

The drummer doesn't have the exhaust valve that the OE exhaust does. W/ the stock ecm you'll definately throw some codes unless you have that exhaust valve emulator that tricks the ecm to think that its still there.

EBR does make a tune secificaly for the drummer. There isn't any thing that is really "race" about the EBR ecm's in terms of being "track only". They just match the mods better than the stock ecm's can and you might pick up a few hp. The bikes are pretty much maxed out from the factory in the HP dept. These bolt on mods give very marginal gains.

I have the same problem on my 2009 motor, please let me know what the issue is, does anyone have a stock 2008+ XB 12 ECM they can try?

THE BUELL IS FIXED.

I replaced the spark plugs which had become fouled after the couple months of the bike running with the wrong air/fuel mixture. So to wrap it up, I replaced the battery, Engine Temperature sensor, spark plugs (first time), cleaned the IAC, replaced the TPS, replaced the O2 sensor and finally replaced the spark plugs (again).

Somewhere in the middle of all that I stripped the oil drain plug changing the oil which just aided to the frustration. But now its running like a top. All I need to do for the summer is the primary oil and maybe brake pads.

Thanks again for all the help.

So I know in May I said it was fixed, well - it wasn't. Symptoms came back. A guy on Bad Weather Bikers found some strange data in some of my logs (temperature and O2 spikes) and recommended I clean all the grounds. I used a dremel and wire brush and polished all the ground contacts under the seat (left and sight side of the seat frame and engine ground strap) and the bike has run great with no issues. I'm about 110 miles with the cleaned grounds so anyone with similar issues, just clean the grounds first. I definitely had corrosion which I could not see until disconnecting them. Thanks again to everyone who helped, especially Readyxb from BadWeB.

I now this is an old thread but...
I have the latest version of ECMdroid and was recently learning how to do a TPS reset and I kept getting "Broken Pipe" message on one of the screens, not in the error codes. I finally found that i have to 'disconnect' the tablet from the bike when I'm finished and 'reconnect' the next time I use it or I will get the "Broken Pipe" message.

Coincidentally, my ECMDroid was misbehaving as well, and would not connect (and sometimes just start to connect and drop it at "page 2"). I leave my dongle plugged in all the time, and I'm *assuming* that the heat may have been making the dongle get wonky. After the bike cooled down, it was able to connect again.
