Hi,
I need the help of people on that one.
Bought 3 years ago a rebuilt Buell XB12Ss 2006 with the Race Kit (ECM and Exhaust). the bike has now 64 000 Km on it and the bike paperwork are saying it's a 2006 so that is what I thought until today and you will understand my dilemma. I added an open box K&N filter last year and the bike was still running great. 3 weeks ago I added a Jardine RT-1 exhaust and I immediately noticed some exhaust pop but nothing major. The pop usually happened when I close the throttle and decelerate and it was occasionally happening.
The more I was riding the bike in the last weeks I start notice some hesitation while cruising and more popping of the exhaust when the headherst and exhaust where hot. I was still able to ride it but this was now a problem rising. I told myself that I was probably running very rich and when the exhaust system was getting very hot there was some auto ignition inside the Jardine can...
Yesterday I start investigating and did a ride to test the bike in every condition (full load, heavy compression, cruising). At a certain moment the exhaust start popping like crazy, lots of hesitation that looks like a fuel cut off or misfires (no check engine lights came on). it went to the point where the engine stalled. I was able to restart the bike with no problems but the popping and stalling was coming back every 5 min and did it 3 or 4 time until I came back home.
So today I did plug ECM spy and there was not codes. I did a full diagnostic and the Coils, injectors, fuel pump, fans ect... and everything was ok. I checked all my grounds, my battery screws, fuses and everything was ok. I did a TPS reset and an AFV reset and saved my EPROM map cause I start looking a little more deeper into the mapping to see if there was some weird data in the close throttle overrun zone. I noticed that my map was a BUEGB map that is for a 2004 Buell XB (remember my paperwork are for a 2006)
after all the reset I tried the bike and everything was fine...10 minutes after I left home the crazy popping and stalling came back. No service Engine lighs came on again.
I ordered a coil, wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and fuel screen from American Sport Bike so it shouldn't solve the problem cause the bike runs great when cold but it will give me a peace of mind.
I have the feeling that it is my mapping that is incorrect but I may be wrong so here are my questions...
1-Can it be the Cam position sensor that is screwed? what does it do when it fails?
2-Screwed Oxygen sensor?
3-It's clearly a 2004 ECM, is there any ways to know the year of my engine? this way I can put the right software that goes with my bike as a starting point. Maybe they put a full 2004 engine into a 2006 frame or just put together parts to make it work.
Please let me know your thoughts on this cause I am a little confused on where to start.
