So I had an idea yesterday,
My plastics are pretty scratched up on my 1125R from a few drops from my room mate and myself. So naturally, I want those to go away. I was thinking, "What if I were to make some new ones out of fiberglass!"

My Idea is to cover stock parts with wax paper, then putting 1-2 layers over it. Pull it off, then probably reenforce the inside with something. Put a few layers on top of that reenforcement, sand, paint, and mount.

Thoughts or experience?

Do it. I made this outta fiberglass. I have a projector I still need to mount. And it does have a proper paint job on it now

If my way fails I will try that, Thaloc.

Very nice, BuellRiderX. How is the structural integrity on that thing? How many layers did you you do?

I am going to do it. Probably this weekend. Before, during, and after pictures on the way soon. Maybe a new thread, maybe not.

If it works out well I would entertain the idea of making some more up for anyone who wants it.

hehe I don't remember how many layers but when I made it, I didn't know how strong fiberglass is. I'm sure I could step on the 'nose' and it wouldn't break.

Thaloc what would be a release agent when using the bondo? Also what to release the fiberglass from the mold?

correct me if im wrong but wouldnt laying the fiberglass on the outside make the part "oversized" and larger then it really should be?

Yup^ I use to build pools we made a mold over the old peice then fixed any imperfections w/ bondo waxed the piss outa it then made fiberglass copy . Needed plastic shims to wedge between layers to seperate but that was a much larger scale.

You're right. What you do is put the fiberglass over it. Doesn't matter what the outside looks like as long as the inside is smooth. That first piece will be a plug. Then you put some kind of release agent on the inside of the plug and lay it in with fiberglass. Then just pop it out and the outside of it will be same size as original mold. You can make a bunch of these in no time.

Hope that made sense ..

I'll keep those release agents in mind. I went to the hardware store today and got everything I think I need. Tonight I'll start construction. Pictures very soon.
