I have the 08 Buell firebolt, it has 650 miles. I am having the Jardin Exhaust slip on, and the buell race air filter. After i get it out of the shop for the first 20 miles. How should i ride it? Give it hell, or take it easy?

Will it program differently if i ride it like i stole it or take it easy? I know they told me to ride it like i would normally be ridding it after 500 miles

Well, there isn't much being programed unless you're doing a TPS reset. But being how you're putting on a race filter, you're going to run more lean. Maybe you should just leave the race filter off until you can remap the ECM.

Welcome to the Forum jabar. Congrats on your ride. The '08s have the newer ECM. You can do a "learn-in" ride once you add the new exhaust & high flow air filter. (Ride a long ride keeping it around 3200rpm I believe) This way it will compensate and you won't be running too lean until you have time to custom map yourself or have ASB or Xoptiinside.com do one for you.

Edit: You probably already know, but break-in is 500, so yeah, you're good to rip it up right out of the dealership. :D[up] Enjoy!

Sorry bro, lost track......do the ride-in, then rip it.

Yeah but my point was, he's got an '08, so short term, he can do a "learn-in" ride with new exhaust slip-on & air filter, and ECM will compensate for both to an extent. Even though he should eventually get a custom map in the future to prevent damaging his engine. [smirk]

Running too lean causes excessive heat in the engine. Excessive heat is bad news for your pistons & engine components, can cause pre-ignition, and essentially reduce the "lifespan" of your engine. Below is an example to the extreme. Doubt you would ever get to this point, but just it's just an example.

By adding these 2 parts to my bike and doing the 20 mile run in, what and why will make my buell be running lean. And what would i need to do to keep it from running lean, and can i fix it or do i have to take it to the place where i bought the bike to get it done, and my bike is still under warrenty will that affect that?

By adding your air filter, you are allowing more air in. By adding the exhaust, you are allowing more air out. Your engine will be able to take more air in and let more air out than it could before. This is what makes your bike run lean. By riding your bike in the "learn-in" rpm range, your ECM will compensate for these changes and your bike's Air/Fuel ratio will be back to a normal range. No problem, no need to take it in. Just ride it.

wait wait... lets get something straight here. The stock ECM only has so much flexibility. That's why we remap, to shift that flexibility range over. A learn in simply does not compensate for a bad A/F. The correct thing to do for an 08 would be to leave the new filter off the bike. Just putting a new exhaust on only changes the backpressure, not the a/f so you wouldn't have running lean issues. Until you can map it the right way, you should wait to do airbox mods. It sucks, but thats what all 08 owners are dealing with. Just be glad you don't have an 09, because they're even harder to map.

What makes an 09 harder to map? my understanding is that they are pretty much the same as 08's.

in '07 they stopped making Race ECMs. They also put out a calibration in the 08 and up ECMs that wont allow things like Direct Link, and ECMSpy to talk to and change settings in the ECM. Which from my understanding was the only way to remap your ECM. There are piggyback devices like Power Commander, that find ways around that. Also another one PCDIII or something that does the same. But they are about $300+ and you also need Dyno time=Expensive.

The thing about Direct Link and ECMSpy was we could download the software for free to our laptop or PC or even Handheld. Then buy/make the cable that connects to your bike and do it yourself, for crazy cheap.

I understand I just thought you were saying the 09's were harder to tune than the 08's. Seems to me that the 08's and 09's run on the same software. I'm looking into ECMspy2 for my 09.

08s aren't mappable without piggyback from everything iv found. Power Cammander or PCDII is all that works.
