First Bike....First wreck

[up] on the training course. I rode dirt bikes for years when I was younger. Was following a buddy on a trail and he hit a loose branch that was flung off a tree right through my front wheel. Freak accident, but made me stop riding for quite a few years. Didn't break anything but slide out pretty hard and they were picking gravel and such out of my knee for many years. Took a riding course before I started riding again a s a refresher and it was the best thing I did. Doesn't hurt, and in most cases gets you an insurance discount.

When I first started riding on the street, I had a bad habit of down shifting going into a turn without the least bit of an attempt to rev match. The rear end would kick out and scare the crap out of me. I can imagine what would happen if I had done that in the rain.
The most important thing is just be super smooth with all of your inputs.

I attempted to replace the primary cover without success. Everything seemed to go smooth however once reinstalled I can not move the shift shaft at all, whereas i could before. I am assuming I messed something up internally when I had it off? I will probably just take it somewhere to get fixed but I am afraid it will cost a ton. Really sucks.

Did you put a gasket back on or just goober it (gasket sealer)? Without a gasket, the cover kind of clamps down on the shaft and it wont spin freelyy

You can do it, are you trying to turn shaft by hand, vise grips or. The shifter,
With out being there to see i am offering my opinions.
You can try loosining the primary bolts so the cover backs off a little and see if it turns then,, did you put a little oil on the shifter seal before you slid the shaft in, Pm me your number and i can try to call this evening.
I hate to see people pay big money to a dealer for easy fixes.

So when I start the bike with the clutch lever pulled, the primary chain spins with a clinking noise, but then the bike isn't in gear. If i let out the clutch completely the rear tire does not spin and the engine does not sputter or die. But the neutral light isn't on and the rear tire does not freely spin forward. I took the play out of the clutch line.

Have you looked at the service manual? Your shift shaft could be bend or not installed properly. Also there's a procedure for adjusting the clutch that goes beyond just taking the slack out of the cable.
Read through the primary and clutch sections of the service manual and I think you'll be able to figure out what's causing you problems.
Don't throw in the towel yet and turn the bike over to a shop.
Good luck
