I know everyone was browsing through HD's corporate governance section today, but did anyone else notice their production figures?

Ouch! No wonder they shut it down. They make 40% more on HDs than they did on Buells, even using the 1/2qt 09 numbers. On the page I got that from, they also say they lost $68m selling MV Augusta. They also point out that for the Q1/Q2 they lost $103.5 in discontinued operations (so, $35.5m for Buell)

Read it and weep

Yea but do you realize they didn't care about Buell as they did about their precious dying Harley line. If they would have had better marketing and given Buell more showroom respect; I believe they would have seen some different figures. Not to mention that if they let Eric have more say; just think a turbo Buell...:)))Ahh what could have been. Remember it's Harley’s poor attitude and lack of business principles and tactics. They had something good going years ago. They had the hearts and minds, hell they even had people branding themselves. This respect is dying though, I think the recession and people realizing that they are not as innovative as other companies are. Now a days it’s about more bang for your buck. As Harley is resting on their laurels and selling overpriced products on its old respect; no wonder they failing I am just surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. IMO

You should read the full report, they pretty agree with you. They call the recent slow in a sales a generational cyclical downturn.

Of course they make more selling HD over Buell, $35,000 vs $12,000??

I've seen quite a few Harleys for sale, rather new ones to boot, for almost half price. With the economy in the ******* (so we're told) it's surprising they sell any bikes at all.

This looks to me like this timeline started right before they shut down buell. Of course they're not going to make money on them when they're selling these things for $6k

just because Buell didnt make that money doesn't mean that HD didn't make that money off of buell

charging an extra 80% for engines hurt Buell profits but padded the HD pocketbook
those profits are probably listed in the "other" section

HD makes pretty much the profit they do because people buy into the life style. Great margin for a so so product. You can buy a Honda or Yamaha that's twice as nice and pay 5 grand less, those companies still work in the black, but HD buyers over pay. Wish I could sell something based on a perceived but not real benefit.
