I paid $10.12 for 2.629 gallons of gas today... It was 94 octane though. So, ~1 gallon of 91 was in the tank + 2.6gallons of 94 == ~93.2 octane

Just thought I would sample it, I got the gas and rode home, nothing special. So I really don't expect to notice a difference, but we'll see.

I found a gas station that had 87 89 91 94 96 98 100 & 110-LEADED

today 100 & 110 were 5.749/gal
94 was $3.849/gal

I live here in MI and almost all gastation well 60% of them carry 93 Octane and that is what I always run.

Once in a while I will go down to one of the 3 stations that carry 110 Octane Unleaded Hass and put a gallon of that in my bike.

I say screw the 94 and bump up to the 98 or 100 octane.

At any regular gas station in Oklahoma the best octane level I have ever seen is 91 at Shell. Which I just filled up at this morning. 2.684 Gallons for $6.71.

I run Chevron 93 in all my bikes, $2.97 last fill up. I run B99 in my truck and it was $2.48 a gallon at the pump yesterday. That doesn't include the $.50 tax break I get per gallon, though.

here is a question, would leaded gas hurt our bikes? We don't have a CAT or anything like that.. so what if you mixed a half a gallon of 110 leaded with 91 or 94??

If run regularly, the leaded gas will likely cause sensor damage. But if you run it only so often, then no major issues.

The main problem I see is if you run something higher/lower than what your bike is mapped for, then your bike is not running as well as it could. So if you are paying more for higher octane but aren't tuned for it, then you won't get the full advantage of it.

My speed issue has been resolved to the simple fact I am running an XB9 not an XB12.

Many if the guys I talked with that have 9's top out at the same speed. And I have never run 91 only 93 and once in a while a little 110.

Hurt the bike, not in the short run, but if ran continuously, there will be some deposit build up since all the fuel will not burn. As far as sensor's, I wouldn't worry about them directly. I ran tank fulls of straight 110 leaded race gas in my car for 2 years every weekend or every other weekend and had no problems with my Wideband o2 sensor.

The higher octane the more resistance to burn the fuel has and like said previously you won't be making as much power. If you have a turbo or a built engine that requires the high octane fuel to prevent knock, fine, but you aren't doing anything for your bike if it's basically stock and running a high octane fuel. Your engine run's best with a fuel that just slightly passes the threshold of knock. I use 93 which is technically overkill since our bikes only require 91 oct. but I have tuned my bike and added some timing.

Man I wish we had gas stations around here like that.

The only place we can get C12 race fuel (110) octane is the local circle track or the drag strip. The best we can get at the pump is 93... so that is what I run.

Hey Reds, Im in SoCal too..found a listing of SoCal high octane stations.

Damn, I wish it was that easy to find Biodiesel. Looks like I will be running a lot of dino on my trip this weekend.

I run 93. But more importantly I run 93 octane that contains no ethanol. Almost ALL name brand gas stations you go to run up to 10% ethanol in all their fuel. Look around next time you go to fill up, some states make them post it.

I almost always fill up at a local mom and pops gas station here in town that refuses to pump ethanol in their gas. They also sell 102 unleaded(i think) and 110 leaded. Ask around u might find one yourself =P . But as said above unless my bike was pinging, or tuned for it, I wouldn't put that in.

On a side note, I was talking to a local guy who has his own Dyno, and he told me something I had never heard before. He says that new bikes are "Ping proof" as long as u dont change the spark plug wires. Something about sensors there that the bike can detect the ping and respond with correcting the timing automatically. Anyone else heard this?

I can get 110 octane a block away from where I work. But it's like $6/gallon.
I haven't brought myself to fill up at that rate. But I'd like to give it a shot.

If the octane only causes the fuel to burn more slowly, does that mean that there is no power to be gained by running a higher octane than your engine is tuned for? And could power be improved by running the lowest octane that the engine would tolerate? Faster burn=more power but higher heat? Slower burn less heat.Or am I just way off?

oka, I ran 110 octane in my honda crx race car, I tuned the timing and fuel pressure etc. for the best performance. High octane burns slower, but more complete. It only helps if your tuned for it.

I think Thaloc has the best argument for running a specialty octane. Ethanol.

**** Ethanol.

I was getting 38-40 highway MPG in my commuter car a few years ago, and that was at 70-80mph average. When california started adding ethanol, my mileage dropped down to 32-35mpg... something about environment?

How can it be good for the environment if its causing me to burn MORE fuel to go the same distance?

When I ride down to dave_xb12r's place, for the motoGP weekend, I will be running straight 94 octane. I will post my mileage results here.

I usually use unical 76's 91 and get ~130 miles before my fuel light.

I dont mind ethenol because the 10% that is in the pumps here in oregon is made in oregon. So I might get less mpg, but its 10% domestic fuel.

It's not so much that it burns slowly as much as it's resistance to burn under higher temperature and pressure conditions. The resistance to burn prevents the fuel igniting before the spark plug sparks and the piston, valves, etc are in the correct position for combustion. Since it has a greater resistance to burn, running 110 in your engine designed for 93 will not burn all the fuel leaving deposits of unburnt fuel. You are correct in your assumption of using the lowest octane fuel tolerable to prevent knock. That is where the most power will be seen...
