I have also purchased most of the gear I wear right now off of Craigslist. From the neck to knee I have spent less than $300 on gear and have a rack full of options. The only items I purchased new were helmet and boots. I wouldn't purchase a used helmet unless I really knew it's history (used boots in my size are just damn hard to find).
It sounds like the big holes in your gear are boots and pants.
I have a pair of overpants and a pair of mesh riding pants. The mesh pants are more comfortable to ride in than jeans but light on the knee and shin protection so I ride with knee and shin guards under them when hitting my favorite roads.
For years motorcycles were my only transportation. A cable lock kept all of my gear safe everywhere I went although it often got wet
Good rain gear that you can keep packed on your bike also make DD on your bike much nicer and can help keep you warm when the temperature drops while you are out.
