Anyone have opinions on the motorcycle gps units out there? Reliability, durability, bluetooth, music, ease of use, price? Thanks...

Verizon droid = bluetooth, music, turn by turn voice gps, phone, net, I'm working on a duck taped blade attachment rthen it really will be swiss arm threat

I have a TomTom Rider 2nd edition

It's pretty good, but I had to make my own mount thing for it. It has really good recalculation time, but I have found occasionally very minor issues with the map. Best bonus is it comes with a bluetooth headset (scala rider) that is water proofed and is pretty loud. I don't have a bluetooth phone so I can't comment on that functionality, but the GPS is suppose to work as an intermediary for your phone as well.

I personally like the mounting location, it's out of the way but readily viewable.

+1 on the droid, I am very impressed with its GPS capability. It even switches to Google street view when you near your destination and shows you what it actually looks like. You can even view your custom maps from google as its integrated. Very good for custom routes.
I had a storm and just got the droid, a million times better hands down.
They also make a nice car kit for it that has a "ram" like mount and a windshield suction cup mount. I just adapted mine to the Ram stem mount I had. Just finished it this evening, no camera to take pics, I would usually use the phone! I will get some tomorrow. Very clean install.
Anyone looking for mounting solutions www.ram-mounts.com is great quality, and lots of options. I went for the stem mount because I am kinda OCD about symmetry.

Thanks guys... Thats a pretty sweet setup Thorivola. Def looking for something like that... the phones do seem like they do everything now but are they waterproof and vibration resistant? Plus the extra $/month for internet.... As far as price and basic A to B functionality it seems like the TomTom can't be beat....

Is there any way to wire up the GPS so it will charge?? I went on a few rides last year and GPS died, only has 4-5 hr charge.

Stangxb12r, notice the power plug I insalled on the left.

I like that setup Dave.

Browland or Jornum I read reviews that the droid's screen is pretty amazing, how easy is it to view at a glance(when riding)? Think I'm gonna go check one out soon..

not that I advocate using a cell phone while on a bike because I dont but I have noticed that I am able to READ text msgs while riding...( in a straight line on a back road with the phone in one hand going about 35 or 40) Im sure with a good mount gps use would be no problem

You ask and you receive ;-) See pics below

Being that its been pretty frigid up here in the north east I have not had a chance to ride with it more then once so far. But it is easy to view while riding. I do like that with my ear bud hands free on, I can hear the directions rather then having to look down. Kinda neat and works very well.
Another cool feature of the droid is that the voice recognition is top notch. you can literally just say the address and it finds it no problem. Of course this wouldnt work too well with wind, and engine noise, stopping would be necessary.
As with any touch screen they arent very glove friendly unless you get a motorcycle specific one like a zumo.
But it will work with my lighter summer gloves. I dont play with it while riding as it is unsafe. Just the occasional song skip which I can do without looking down I will stop if I need to make any changes. I just like being able to see/hear if someone calls. Mostly my wife as I have a 7 month old, and 4 husky/malamutes which can be a hand full sometimes.

I was thinking of using it for gps while riding. I wouldn't be texting or anything :D I guess what I'm asking is when it says "turn right" and you wanna know if its the street in 50ft or 100ft, can you glance at the screen (while mounted) and visibly be able to decifer which street to take?

yea it acts like any other GPS, better then the several that I have had actually.
It zooms in when you get close to the turn, and actually shows you the location via google street view if available. Pretty awesome.
Best part is that you dont need to buy updated maps, as they are always up to date!

The way I have it mounted it is easy to see, and I can actually raise it about 4" closer if necessary. But I had no problem reading it in my test ride.
Maybe if we get some days above 40, I will take some vid from my contour mounted on my helmet.

Is there anywhere specific you have to pull the power from??? A buddy of mine tried hookin it up to battery and endin up screwin up GPS lol. How do you tell Pos and Neg on the cord?? Any help would be awesome. Like the idea about the power plug Dave.

You can pull it from the battery without a problem. Though you should make sure its fused(sometimes the plug itself is fused).
All Buells xb and 1125's at least have a accessory plug somewhere in the front faring. You can buy the Uly kit which plugs into this and has a cigarette outlet. Or you can buy a aftermarket one. If you do, I suggest buying a marine grade or one specifically for a motorcycle. Like this

Also I think I am going to invest in one of these to protect my $500 phone. There are different sizes for those who use a phone/mp3/gps that is not waterproof. They are pretty nice, waterproof, and you can still use the touch screen.

the TomTom Rider is waterproof and all that jazz and is very friendly to gloved touch

Garmin makes a motorcycle GPS too, dunno how that one works comparatively but it is almost $800 and the TomTom is ~$500

The Droid is so money! (and I'm not just saying that because I work for a certain major cell phone provider)
I have one and it does everything.

I'm just too nervous to mount mine on my bike. I'd be afraid I'd lose it in a turn.

:( wish i would have waited now and got the droid. got my blackberry storm about 2 weeks before it came out
