I'm picking up an '03 XB9S on thurs. The seller gutted the muffler, and I'm not sure what effect this has on the backpressure...So I'm hoping that someone here can help me out.

I would suspect that everything was taken out...I'll be asking the seller about it when I talk to him next.

What would I have to weld into it to make it work? (if it's completely gutted)

Line of site baffles?

Or should I just begin searching for a OEM muffler?

what i would do to the orginal is keep the exhaust valve in working condition.

Under "normal" riding conditions the ECM will continually update the AFV (add or remove fuel).

I think what burnteyes is suggesting is to re-map the fuel curve to account for the higher exhaust flow.

You should have no trouble finding information on that.

In my opinion, I would start looking for an aftermarket exhaust for the bike. Who knows what kind of hack-job they did on the stock one. Buy an exhaust AND have the ecm remapped. (just my 2c tho)

I dunno, in my opinion, this is just the perfect reason to get a jardine...or a full micron.

Yeah that would be nice. But as I stated I don't have the $ for that right now. So I'm just concerned about running too lean. If I hear it pinging I'll just have to open it up and add some baffling.

There is a thread on here somewhere about how to "gut" your stock muffler, perhaps you could "acquire" some exhaust piping and just add what that thread has...

If your going to buy the bike for X number of dollars then tell the seller u don't feel comfortable about the muffler and get him to reduce his price to accommodate for u getting a new exhaust system.

The Tin Man makes an excellent point... Why should you have to pay for his "custom" exhaust?

Say $300, that will buy you a new Jardine or you could get a very good condition used OEM muffler for well under that(between $100 and $200). I'm sure MSRP on the OEM muffler is probably around $1000 as anything OEM is expensive...

So I talked to the seller today, and asked him if he had it dyno-tuned after he gutted the muffler. He said that the place he gets his work done said there wasn't anything available to tune it...Oh and he forgot to mention that he modified the air box too.

So I told him that I was going to call the HD/Buell shop that I trust to see what they could do. The guy I talked to there said that he can get me a tunable module for $200 and have it tuned in 1hr for an additional $90.

I called the seller back and he said he'd drop $150 off the price we originally agreed to. I wish he'd have come down for the entire amount. But I can live w/ this deal...

You might have gotten really lucky. A modded air box which is almost impossible to mess up (since you don't need all that plastic in there anyway) and gutted muffler can be a good thing if done right. and to save $150 can buy you a new stock can if that one is crap.

Yeah I just hope he did a decent job of welding it back together. If I'm not happy w/ the sound I'll open it up and add some baffling. Then it will be off the the dyno.[smirk]
