How about we celebrate the day we gained our independence instead of celebrating a number. I know you said the holiday name in the thread so it's not a big deal. I just have a pet peeve when people refuse to call holidays by their names, Christmas and Independence day are the big ones for me.
 
Everyone has the freedom to call it what they want :D

Yes happy Independence Day. I do however find it amusing we celebrate the day we declared our independence, and not the day we actually won our independence :D
 
How about we celebrate the day we gained our independence
ok but we didnt gain our independence on the 4th there was a little fighting ahead still.
i will post another thread on sept 3 though since you are such a stickler loki

September 3, 1783, we GAINED our independence though some feel me included it wasnt set in stone until 1812.

I am not trying to be a stickler I just find it disrespectful and I believe that this country has become so "politically correct" that people are actually forgetting what this day was about. I fear that throughout the years we will have people (not kids) who when asked what this day is they will say "Its the time of the year we celebrate fireworks" and even with memorial day "national bbq day!" and of course christmas.

Again I know you were not trying to be or even was being disrespectful, and you actually included what we are celebrating in your words so please don't take this as a rant towards you, just towards society. Go on facebook or any other social site and count the number of time someone says happy 4th vs. happy independence day.

Hell maybe it is just because people cant spell independence and im just an asshole ;)

Our 4th Of July

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56
men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,
and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;
another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or
hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their
fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and
large plantation owners; men of means, well-educated,
but they signed the Declaration of Independence
knowing full well that the penalty would be death if
they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and
trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by
the British Navy. He sold his home and
properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British
that he was forced to move his family almost
constantly. He served in the Congress without pay,
and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions
were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall,
Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and
Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson,Jr., noted that
the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson
home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General
George Washington to open fire. The home was
destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.
The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was
dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his
gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in
forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and
his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday
and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the
price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free! We thank these early patriots,
as well as those patriots now fighting to KEEP our freedom!

Loki... I agree with you on our country is way to "politically correct"

... everyday that goes by, the traditions we've had are slowly going away or being renamed cause someone or some group doesn't like it.

as a veteran of two services, I share my thanks to God, to those before me, those I've served with, and those currently serving, and the people behind the scenes that made it possible.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!
 
this country is way to politically correct the funny thing is when people feel this way then comment about the name of a day not being correct just makes no sense to me.enjoy
