i was thinkin about opening up my xb9 muffler and gutting it. has anyone done this and not added any packing? also how different is the 9 muffler over the 12. ive seen some DIY mods but they all seem to be 12 mufflers, just wasnt sure how different they are internally.

I've seen just as many 9's done as 12's. Nines are lighter and don't have the valve to deal with. If you just totally gut it you'll have almost no back pressure if any at all.

I have a gutted/chopped Race pipe, so in all it would sound the same. It was chopped down when I bought the bike I ripped it back apart and put in the radius and some packing in the nose of the pipe.

You can see the mesh in the front of the pipe I used a hole sawy to cut it open then packed it with the fiberglass packing.

Why dont you sell me that 9 pipe and gut your 12? The 9 is lighter and doesn't have a valve, so it's great for the professional fab guys. I'm working on getting some front exits made and I need all of the 9 pipes that I can get.

I think you are going to want to either add packing, chambers, or baffles to the exhaust. Otherwise just an empty can is going to be very loud, kill mid-range, and sound like crap. If you search on here you will find people that have used packing, made baffles, or used chambers and pipes. But to just have an empty hollow can is going to sound poor. I would imagine you would probably have a noticeable decrease in midrange torque too with the poor exhaust scavenging effects.

dave, i dont have a 12 muffler. ive just only seen the inside of a 12 muffler thats why i was asking.

but i decided to go a different route until i can gather some cash to either send mine out to randy or buy a jardine.

so what i did was is made a set up that can utilize HD slip ons. i had a bunch of sets laying around my garage from various HDs that my father has owned. so i got a 90* turn, cut it up and welded it back together to make the right angle i needed.

at first i tried a screamin eagle slip on and it was crazy loud. definitely noticably more torque through low and mid range.

next i tried a stock slip on. ended up sounding pretty much exactly like the stock buell muffler. quiet as hell. at that point i was unsure what to do, but i realized that one of the stock sets had the baffle drilled through, so i slapped it on and it sounded perfect. ill have to get sound clips as soon as i can.

the only downside is that performance was definitely lost. i lost torque through the entire rpm range and and especially top end. my bike has a k&n so i guess ill be ordering an ECMspy cable and loading a race map on there.

also i notice that that fan wasnt coming on. not sure if running a more free flowing exhaust allows the engine to run cooler or what.
