I have a Hawk on right now, love the sound and have it DDF3 tuned to it with KN and open airbox. I picked up a Buell race muffler locally, and was going to clean it up and give it a shot. Any one have experience with both mufflers on an XB9? Would the tune be that much different on each?

Change it and see the difference yourself ... I never had a chance to hear them live but it is always good to check yourself as everybody may have different taste in sound. I currently run Akrapovic which is dedicated to honda CBR1000r and I love it.

If you end up switching the exhausts post your thoughts on how the two compare. I have the race exhaust now but have always wanted to see what people think are the key differences (+'s and -'s) across that and the aftermarket drummers/hawk exhausts.

Al at Americansportbike.com has done a review of most available mufflers for Buells. I believe they even include sound clips. http://www.americansportbike.com/Exhaust_Shootout.html I personally wouldn't try and fix something that isn't broken. If you like the way your bike sounds and runs than leave it be. In my experience with the Buells changing mufflers and ECMs can give you CEL problems. To every man is his own and it is nice to hear it live but that's just my 2 cents.

I've heard the clips on both, and they both sound great, just mainly don't want what you describe.. A CEL or to mess up the ECM. I guess my curiosity is on any performance difference.

IMO the hawk is louder all together but especially at idle, they both sound great at high rpm's but hawk is still louder. The hawk also has a more hollow sound.

I gutted my stock exhaust (which is pretty much the same thing as a hawk besides the outlets which you can choose IIRC on the hawk) and added dual 2" turn downs and loved the sound but eventually found a deal I couldn't pass on eBay for the factory race pipe. I personally prefer the buell factory race can looks and sound but that's my opinion. Re-tune would be better if you switch as the race can should have more back pressure as it's not just a hollow can like the hawk.

Like I said that's my opinion if I'm wrong someone will be sure to correct me but as far as the sound and looks it's all personal preference.

50dro's hawk is probably my favorite Hawk exhaust I've seen, I think it had one 3" outlet turned to one side. Sounded and looked great.
