help i got a rattle

hello i just purchased an 03 blast and i got it home and fired it up and it seems to have a lot of valve train rattle is this normal or is there an adjustment on them???

I'm not a blast guy, but according to totalMotorcycle.com they are self adjusting just like the XB's

What's your background? Is this your first bike (if not, what did you own before?)

If you've never owned/ridden an air cooled push rod engine bike before it will surprise you how much noise they make. It's probably normal.

Well i own an 07 dyna and have zero noise and i also owned a 83 gs 650 no rattle either. It is a goofey rattle that is off and on like a elf with a tiny hammer inside at idle but one you pick up r's it quiets up and has good power. i just dont want to blow it up because i failed to do minor repair

well its only 10 degrees up here in wisconsin so i cant ride it butit does it all the time wether first start or after ideling for 5 to 10 mins

Blasts rattle quite a bit at idle. On mine and a couple I've ridden, when standing still the bike shakes enough to make every part that can rattle do just that.

Check the footpegs and anything with a pivot point before looking into more serious issues.

I had a bad rattle once, it turned out to be the horn under the flyscreen. It would rattle against the head light bucket and had me worried because it sounded like the drive train.

Its your primary - its loose - Go in five to eight flats or adjust till rpms drop then go out 8 to 12 flats. If the rattling hasn't stopped - it may be time to replace your primary adjuster shoe. If you do go into the primary then while you are in there, there are other things to do as well.

the primary is a very good idea but i can take a metal object to various parts of the engine and i can hear the most noise on the valve cover. they are just tapping away. but doesn't seem any way to adjust them unless my lifters are bad or rocker arms are wore out???

Look - do the adjustment, I'm betting the noise disappears, if I'm wrong, and this is a stock bike, then your next step would be a minor timing adjustment for detonation, and adding some SEAFOAM directly through the carb while running for several minutes to clean up carbon build up, and adding it to your oil and gas as well, then when your tank is almost empty, change oil/filter, and put in some fresh premium and only run premium.

well i did the primary adj and there is no change. so i took off the valve cover and rocker box and found that there is alot of back and forth play in the rocker arms like side to side and you can see wear marks on the right side of the rocker box i think this is the prob now what can i use to shim between the rocker and box???

Someone probably did the rocker cover gasket fix and put the rockers back wrong. I'd Try a re-assembly first to see if it brings back the proper clearances - do some measurements as well.

is there supposto be any spacers between the rockers and the box???

gasket - they have changed styles like 4 times though - so its anybody's guess as to what style your running.
