Hello, Buell Brothers.

I just purchased a beautiful 2008 XB12sTT and had it shipped to California. In trying to register it, I discovered that since it is marked as having less than 7500 miles on it and does not have the CA emissions sticker, I can not register it here.

Does anyone have the CA emissions canister that they removed from their XB? Unfortunately, I can't just drive the 3500 miles on it to make it 7500, it was already entered in the system.

OR I may be selling a pristine XB12sTT to someone outside of California. I believe in 2008 they only made 106 of them.

Appreciate any help!

I'm never going back to Cali

You could buy or borrow a gauge cluster with 7500+ miles on it, get it registered, and swap yours back on.
Just do NOT try and sell it before you actually get to 7500 on your original cluster...

Unfortunately, I was unaware of this 7500 rule. I registered the bike with the title showing 3k miles. They needed me to bring the bike back in to verify VIN, engine, etc. and that's when i got the bad news. So I'm in the system with 3k miles and i don't have a VIN that will prove this was a CA model.

Looks like i have a XB12sTT for sale...

:(

This is the exemption I believe.

""Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or vehicles 1975 and older.
NOTE: California law prohibits importing and/or registering a new vehicle (one with less than 7,500 miles at the time of purchase) unless it meets or is exempt from California emission standards. If you acquire a 49 state vehicle (vehicle manufactured for all states except California) from another state or country and do not qualify for one of the exemptions, you cannot register your vehicle and must immediately remove it from this state. You may purchase a One-Trip Permit to do so.
Reference: Health & Safety Code Section 43151(A)"

Find this section in the DMV registration paperwork and SHOW it to them. MOTORCYCLES are EXEMPT because of the wording on SMOG inspections.

Because of the shitty ass dmv website they have, go to http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv and search for "smog exemption" and print that page out. Take it with you to the dmv, have them look the shit up if they don't believe your printout.

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?

Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs
Electric
Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs.
Motorcycle

Bitch at them long and loud enough, you should eventually prevail.

It sucks I won't be around to watch that state fall off into the Pacific.

Nice find Dean!

I'll do you a favor. I'll trade you my 2004 XB-12S with 40K miles for your 2008 TT and pay shipping both ways. Just give me the word and it will be done!;)

D Adams, I like it. And yellowcarbon... so kind of you.

I was at the DMV (at AAA) for over an hour yesterday. Believe it or not, there were two ladies doing everything they could to try to make my registration happen. Unfortunately, they couldn't bypass the 7500 miles issue. They did inform me that when they initially entered my XB in the system, they didn't put in the ACTUAL milage.

A 'nod' and a 'wink' later and I have a plan. Wish me luck. I'll let you know in a week or two.

AAA kick ass. They have done things like that for me as well [up] good luck!

I'm sure a little token on appreciation to them would be appreciated. Flowers? Candy?

Know anyone in the military? Mil registration can by pass this issue. I'm active duty and just imported an STT to CA also (with less than 7,500) with no problem by simply registering in a different state (which Active Duty military can do). So... sell it to a friend in the military, have him register it for you, and you can ride it.

Let us know how it works out. Too bad I just bought my STT or I'd be all over it.

Thanks to the kind folks at AAA DMV, I am all registered. And Cooter, I was thinking the same thing. Who doesn't appreciate a box of candy for helping another Buell finds it's way on the road.

Cheers!
