HELP! Stripped oil drain threads on swing arm.

Jeshua, this just happened to me. Mine is still under warranty, but dealer / Harley refused to cover. Told them I was just following manual instructions (26-29 ft-lbs) but without looking at swingarm they said it couldn't be a manufacturing defect. Did they cover yours? Did they give you any hassle about it? Thanks.

the torque spec for the clutch case is 1/2 that of the engine case. the engine case is a miss print

I just laid my bike on its side and drilled out the hole and retapped it for a 14mm plug. Took like 5 minutes and cost about $10 for a 14mm tap and plug

I did that on my ZRX1200R and took the oil pan to a Kawasaki dealer. Guess what they did? Drilled and tapped my oil return line and not the oil drain plug. Got a new oil pan free then!

I over tightened mine as well. I definitely ruined some threads but think I caught it in time before too much damage was done. The specs are definitely wrong. Frustrating!

No leaking at this point, but curious after my next oil change if I find any additional shavings stuck to the plug.

Is the drain hole about the same depth of the plug? Trying to figure out how much room for error there is next time oil change is due.

netty you wont find any alloy shavings on the plug. I did mine with the timesert kit and had a fitter/machinist mate take a look and he aggreed that the 0122a timesert kit is the way to go. Used original plug and oring and just nipped it up tight . thank you factory workshop manual for missing what would have been 2 great rides.

i guess this might be the time that my practice of not reading the manual from start to finish might serve me well. dad always said "finger tight, then just a tiny bit more". that nugget, along with seeing that people are having problems with it, i will be extra careful when dealing with mine.
sorry to hear of everyone's issues; but thanks for sharing it with everyone else. [up]
