I just got my bike back together after performing three mods and now my bike is running like crap. I fired it up and went on the freeway to let the ECM relearn everything and the bike is vibrating like hell between 2,000 and 2,300 rpm, but runs good above and below that range. The bike also seems down on power because I was having to run at 4,000 rpm to get the bike to do 70 mph and normally at that rpm is good for about 80 mph.

The mods I did were

1. Breather reroute
2. MikeD718 $85 steering damper mod
3. I put an S tail on my SS.

My first thought is the breather reroute, so I am going return to the stock setup and see what happens.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

Walter.

ok , it I put the breather back to stock and the problem is still there. I should also add that the sub frame was powder coated yesterday so I am going to check my grounds next.

Thinking if it was the grounds, it would run like crap through all the RPM's. Thinking maybe a TPS reset and another Learn-in ride. Did you do the Learn-in ride holding around 3500rpm for a good 15-20 mins?

3500 rpm for about 5 minutes uninterrupted then another uninterrupted 5 at the same rate back. I was under the impression that it only took a few minutes for the ecm to do its thing. Maybe that is the problem, but I also dont want to keep running the bike if something is potentially wrong.

Thanks for your two cents, I appreciate it [up]

I wouldnt think it has anything to do with your breather reroute, I accomplished a reroute along with open airbox mod and a K&N filter without doing a tps reset and my bike didnt run that bad.

I don't know what is all included in powder coating the subframe, but i would check over anything (like engine mounts) that could have been missed getting torqued when the bike was being reassembled.

BTW, I am new to working on bikes, not as easy as troubleshooting jet engines :D

I'm leaning towards you needing a TPS reset. As far as "learn-in" ride time, I've seen times of 20+ mins. posted before, never 5 mins. Either way, hope you get it sorted and let us in on what fixes it. :D

Thanks guys, I just ordered a cable for ECMspy from Xopi and he is going to help me figure things out.

I to have seen a huge variation of times and rpm ranges recommended to allow for the ECM to learn new mods. What I did was sufficient when I got my new exhaust, but who knows. It would be nice if the answers for that question were a little more consistent. I will ask Xopi what he thinks when the time comes to try again.

Once again thanks to all that have helped, you guys rock :D[up]

What is the $85 steering dampner mod? I know what a steering dampner is just wondering what this $85 mod is and how reliable.

did you check the ground thing?

problems during low rpm can stil be a ground thing if not enough amps are getting through.
at higher rpm's the stator is giving more power and the %-wise more amps are able to get through.

Lefox, I am 99.9999999999999999% that it is not a grounding issue. I sanded the crap out of all of the connections down to bare metal, replaced some of the bolts to non coated ones, and in places used stare washers on top of all of that.

1. Check that your IAT sensor is plugged back in correctly. Easy to overlook when removing/reinstalling your airbox assembly during a breather re-route procedure.

2. Check that your engine temp sensor wire hasn't chafed through it's insulation where it runs underneath the frame tubing. I noticed this happening on mine after only a couple thousand miles. I slit some small vacuum hose and sheathed the sensor wire to buffer it from further chafing. If grounded, it would cause erratic power and other funky running symptoms.

3. Check that your spark plug wires are tightly secured to the coil. It's only a friction fit and they can come loose.

4. Is your battery healthy?

G'day Nitto

I'm Getting my '09 Xb12ss soon and I'm thinking of putting the '09scg sub frame and seat assembly on it so i can get lower to the ground and i just read u have it on yours did u run into any major problem , and could u show me a photo of what it looks like

Dutchy

Thanks Tork,
I know the battery is good and the IAT sensor is plugged in correctly, but I will give the other two a try. I also ordered a ecmspy cable from xopti and he is going to help me see if a problem comes up on that end.

Thanks Stevenc 150,
for redirecting those with questions to the proper links.

[up][up][up] to both of you.

well you didn't have it with the original tailsection, right?

so somewhere, somehow...things must have gone wrong there.
unless you made a short on your ecm, that should not be the problem.
i would trace back what your did during the conversion, step by step. somewhere i would guess there's something giving you some kind of resistance.

Well all I have is time so I can explore all of these avenues.

The bike ran fine after the initial swap, it was after I sent the parts out for powder coating that the problem arose. I told the guy to plug all of the holes and he did and I have sanded down all of the contact points to bare metal.

The bike was apart for a while, due to the parts being sent out for powder coating so I did the breather reroute mod and put the steering damper on in my down time. The battery's positive lead was still connected to the bike during all of this but there was no ground to it because the side rails were off of the bike. Could that have shorted the ecm?

Nope, I gave up after a week of trying everything under the sun and took it to the stealership Saturday afternoon [mad]haven't heard back yet [sad]
I will Keep ya informed when I know more.

it's not cause your brackets are off that you have no ground...

so you left the battery connected during all this?
