I would try and go for the higher flow oil pump and gears from the 08+ bikes. This would also help protect all your engine work. Hope you caught it in time to avoid any other repairs!

Buell tech told me Friday that I should split my cases and clean everything out! I was like, "What the what?!?" I'm hoping for best case scenario as opposed to what he said. The insides of an oil pump is pretty impressive. The amount of material I found above the scavenging gerotor looks to be enough to make up an entire thrust washer. I'd have to see an intact washer though, to commit to that statement. The rest of what I found is a very fine metal mush and very little of it. Impatiently waiting for new oil pump to arrive...

Had a similar experience with wrecker parts. Outside looked good but the internals had suffered "whiplash damage". Could be the situation here.

'08 upgrade is a good idea.

Tear down is the best advice.

Or, what I would probably do is get low cost oil and filters and change them after every run about three times.

You said this was for racing. So you have to measure out possible DNFs versus getting better at complete teardowns which is all part of racing.

Thanks to Wolfo68, who sold me his old pump, I was able to build one good oil pump. Installed, primed engine, started it up, no oil light! There was some loud clanging in the front cylinder that disappeared in a few seconds. Scary noise, though. Thought the engine was going to blow! HA!
