so for LESS money, i could have had the race ecm and ecm spy to tune to the bike appropriately and theoretically had a better running bike?

Possibly

IS the race ecm "better", like will my bike be "faster"?

Race ECM was designed Specifically for the Factory Buell Race Kit (Buell Race Muffler, K&N Filter, and of course Race ECM).

With the entire Buell Race Kit, YES it would make your bike run faster.

it doesnt matter anyway, because i can turn my factory in to a race right?

Yes you can, ASB and Xopti, both sell Custom(Race) Maps for your ECM.

Not sure if ASB does, but I know Xopti stays with you till it's running optimal. You send him datalogging data from your rides, and he sends you updates for your ECM until it's running satisfactorily.

Edit: Not pushing one over the other, just that's what I know about Xopti.

Nope, these bikes come from the factory on the lean side, and as you can tell by the occasional hiccups, hesitations, it leaves something to be desired.

Edit: Xopti is probably the best value $100+ you could spend on your bike to get the most out of the stock setup.

okay, thanks Steven, follow up to that then:

i'm planning on modifying the air filter and the exhaust so i should probably wait until i contact him.. or maybe contact him ahead of time for consult on the direction i go...

I would just wait to contact them until you've done the mods to your bike, if that's what you're asking.

I'd contact Xopti. From what I understand, initially you start with a map that's worked on a bike with mods like yours. It may be that you can have that map saved on your computer and upload to ECM when your mods get completed - no waiting that way. ;)[up]

I agree with steven

to me this would be more of a "Modified" bike. A setting that Xopti would not have seen as of yet and would need your data to make the proper tuning

This option is most likely what they'll offer you, by the sound of your minimal mods
