Well I just got a 12 hour shift and was bout to make the 40 mile journey home and decided I should top off the gas since its cheaper in town. I usually sit on the bike when I fuel up so I just roll up and shut the bike off. Well this time i turned the key to the off position(kick stand up and kill switch on run) and the bike kept running. Dash went off and everything but bike sat there running. Turn the key to the on postion, needles did their dance and rpms went to normal idle speed. Bike still shuts of with kill switch or with kickstand(if in gear) but not the key. Wondering why its doing this all of a sudden? Bout to scratch the hair off my head wondering why.

Sounds like a faulty ignition switch to me. Mine went bad last year with different symptoms.

Yeah, sounds like a bad switch, mine went bad on the honda I used to have, just check everything else as well while you are going to be looking to see if it really is the switch.

Update...well problem is getting worse. Now the headlights don't work, neutral light is stuck on no matter what gear its in, and the highbeam indicator light is stuck on no matter if the switch is on low beam or not. The only way the neutral light will go off is if I put the kickstand down. Is my first buell falling apart or what's going on?

what bike? ddfi-2 will keep running as long as the ecm gets keepalive power from the battery (yellow wire, from key sw. relay via ecm fuse) and a cps signal. to stop engine, the grey wire (from ignition relay) needs to be shut off, as this provides power to coil, fuel pump, injectors. pull ign. relay and bike should go off immediately. the sidestand switch provides ground to ign. relay whith sidestand up. second ground is provided via diode(s) and neutral & clutch switch. check for chafed, grounded cables to one of these three switches. best to start with the neutral switch, [131] connector behind sprocket cover.

Thanks ich. I'm gonna spend Sunday trying to track down the problem. Its just weird because the headlights will come on(very dim) with the bike not running, kill switch on off and kickstand down. If you put the stand up and flip the kill switch the lights shut off. Also the high beam dash light doesn't. Stick on untill you turn the kill switch to on and put the stand up. I actually shut the bike off with the key once but then it quit working again the next two trys. I had the bike running and unplugged the headlight and the bikw shut off. I unplugged the neutral connector behind the sprocket cover on my break at work and the neutral light on the dash was still on so I guess it isn't there. Wonder if the wires to the kickstand switch have gotten loose and melted on the exhaust? Well I'm off to get some rest before work tonight....ugh got to drive the family cage to work until I figure this out.

dim lights often indicate a "false ground", caused by another broken ground wire/missing ground connection. disconnect headlights to check if they reversely feed power to the grey wire. also check diodes if they work properly. you will need a wiring diagram to find common ground wires.
