Nope i dont got any pics i havent even don it to mine yet...But those hose clamps will be a bit better than zip ties because they are easier to get off. Randy says hes even seen cottage cheese come out [down], but iam going to look at mine and see clamp off the entrance to everything

Well, I don't know what my primary oil looks like (bike hasn't bee wet except to wash it so far), but I took this thread as a precautionary tale. Went out and put two small zipties on the top and a wider one at the bottom.

yea, I never rode in the rain either and bike is stored indoors.. Washing can do the same.. I'd pull the boot off the just a bit and see if you see any water or rust.. you can always inspect you clutch inspection plate.. and a flash light will help[up]

This is weird! I have ridden my bike is poring down rain for thousands of miles on my '04 and i have none of these issues. I laugh at the fact people get worried about too much water from washing the bike :D

NOMADIC, you sure you aren't pulling our leg? haha

hha! Funny.. all I know is that the boot was filled with rusty water at one point.. I'm looking for an answer here!!

Sounds like you need to get a new boot or pinch that the ends of your boot off like people are mentioning.

Avoid power washing it [smirk]

I had a similar thing happen to me, but it was white color and just found it on the inspection cover when checking adjustment of the clutch. cleaned it and flushed new oil through it and I replaced clutch cable never had a problem since..

Ok, so hypothetical question??? Say this happens to me, and I want to flush it...Do I have to flush it with the expensive oil that I use normally or is just any oil pretty much fine? Thanks in advance.

If it was my bike I would be pulling the primary cover off and having at it all with some brake clean or carb cleaner. This is the only way you will truly know when and how all that nasty crap got out and also see if there was any damage.

If leaving the cover on and spraying into it with a straw there is still many places it will not get. Even with doing that and refilling it I wouldn't go very far on it(100 miles or less) and change it again.

Yea lightingxb12s04, My cover looked the exact same my oil was just a bit darker... About the whole brake clean.. I think the only way to get it clean is the right way and that to take off your primary cover and clean everything by hand.. although I dont see a problem with a couple flushes or even a few while the oil is hot and all mixed up.. I mean a bottle cost what, $7.. I might end up changing my primary oil several times this season just to ensure its 98% clean.

Im a bit wary of taking off my primary cover.. is it a job or as simple as it looks... anyone have any precautionary steps that I should take. Like clutch cable.. etc..

I had the same problem on my 2010 XB9SX. Enough water got in the primary that the clutch bearing failed at 3000 miles. Water intrusion might not be a warranty item, but replacing a blown clutch bearing was covered under warranty. It would have cost $750 to repair.

Is there any trend as to this occurring with bikes of particular years or models? I ask because one poster mentioned the problem stopping after changing clutch cables.

Not as I know of, but it seems somewhat common..Im pretty anxious to see how it pans out over the season (bearing problems) But as winnwtka they had to change his clutch!!

Winnetka, Did you find out you had water in primary before or after you blew your clutch? And did you have any minor problems before? ie shifting, finding neutral? or was you bike running just fine up until that dreadful day?
