hi guys im new to this forum and buells but ive always wanted one i ride a 69 xlch ironhead and am lookin for something newer and i dont kick my leg off just to start it so im interested in a 03 xb9r i guy by me's sellin on craigslist heres the post http://rockford.craigslist.org/mcy/3890360321.html the price is in my ballpark but the thing that concerns me is the mods are they somethin thats going to cause more greif than good or are they nothin to worry about and what besides the belt should i be lookin for on a bike that has almost 18000 miles? thanks any input would be awsome

Not saying anything bad about that dudes buell... But that isn't a bike for somebody new to Buells. He has modded it and clearly pushed it too the limit. I'm paraphrasing him here because this matters "Maybe Needs clutch work" ... "It's made by Harley" and my favorite "I'm going back to jap bikes"

I picked up my 2007 XB9R with 3800 Miles for $3000 never downed all stock except for Jardine Pipe.

2003 XB9R stock HP=78

2007 XB9R stock HP=92

This is the guy you should be talking to. He has to come down on price that one has 14K miles but look at the exaust headers on that bike then go back and look at the other ones are like 70% Blue from running lean. Plus he's giving you the bike stock with stock muffler it says he borrowed that one from a friend.

I have an 03 XB9R and really enjoy mine. It has the same pipe and K&N and mapped. It is plenty strong enough for me and carries two up just fine. My bike has a little over 17k on it and runs and rides like a champ. The PO never had any issues with it and I don't see any up-coming issues with it either.

Sometimes I would like to have a little bigger bike but then I go riding and always come back to how fun my Buell is.

Yea that first one he has been trying to sell for a long time, that or he did and someone else is now getting rid of it. The one that Xrayron recommended would be a much better option. Also 03's had the smaller and weaker belt. If its out of your price range I would just wait and save a little. It would be worth it saving you from the headaches with that other bike.

THIS.. id be a little weary

@ lunaticfringe .. exactly what I was thinking, either 1 of 3 things ;wheelies the living hell of out it, launches it racing and doesnt know how to launch properly OR just plain rides the clutch like a MOFO at every stoplight

ok thanks guys i was kinda thinkin the same thing that maybe a stock bike would be better since im new to buells but i didnt know cuz i just want one that wont be like a lemon like my iron head where u work on it all day ride for half an hour and the next day have to tear into it again ya know i looked at that other bike and i like that one too id just have to save up for a lil while but if its less headache itd be worth it too me ......also thanks i didnt really think to pay attention to the headers bein blue from goin lean is that quite a problem to watch for and what causes it?

Everything I've seen shows the '03 had less hp but what is the difference? I thought the crank, pistons, heads, cams and all was the same except for the throttle body and the tuning was the same so what made the difference? one is at the wheel and the other is crank?

The 14 hp difference between crank rating and wheel rating is about 15% which would be the average driveline loss you'd see on most bikes. Typical losses are between 15-20% depending on the drive type, shaft being the worst. It's hard to truly compare engine to chassis dyno numbers, there are entirely too many variables to account for.

Both those guys are correct about slight differences between what goes on paper and what hits the pavement... All manufacturers do it.

I wrote an thread to help you negotiate... hopefully this will help other people getting into the world of making deals... It's a hobby of mine lol.

BuellXB how to negotiate

That is the only place I have ever seen that rating, they must have confused their dyno numbers with crank numbers. They are 92 crank, and like Dean said they dyno in the mid 70's

This is official from Buell

2003 SPECIFICATIONS Firebolt XB9R®

ENGINE
Type Air-cooled, Four Stroke, 45º V-Twin
Displacement 984 cc
Bore and Stroke 3.5 x 3.125 in. (88.9 x 79.38 mm)
Compression Ratio 10 : 1
Valve Train OHV, two valves per cylinder
Valve Adjustment Self Adjusting
Fuel Delivery 45.0 mm downdraft DDFI Fuel Injection
Exhaust Free-breathing 2 into 1 collector
Intake Zero Resistance Air Box, Ram Air intake
Power (SAE J607) 92 hp @ 7200 rpm
Torque (SAE J607) 68 ft-lb @ 5500 rpm

Lubrication 2.5 qts. (2.3L)
Oil Filtration Screw-on disposable element

Now, multiply that 92 hp by .85 (15% hit for the driveline) and you end up at 78 hp.

Just my personal testing on _my_ bikes have typically shown a 15-16% driveline loss from the mfg crank rated power, so take that how you will.

So basically what you guys are saying is Buell did what every other car/bike maker does now...

Advertised actual [email protected] release... Sales were down so they justified putting 92HP which should have said 92BHP which is 78HP

This is why pissed off people invented BHP lol
