Hey guys im new and looking for insite on buying a wrecked xb9. I havent seen the bike in person but its really cheap. Apparently he rear ended someone. The front wheel is trashed as well as the forks. He says the headlight and gauges are all untouched. What im really worried about is frame damage. Bike has probably been sitting for almost 10 years and has almost no miles on it. He said it has a carbon fiber body parts but he has the originals and another set of wheels to go with it.
So is there anything I should be looking for as for damage that would cause this deal to go sour? Dont want to get in over my head in money fixing this thing. Not real worried about labor just parts.

Lower stem bearing broke out the frame, dont know if its fixable. and dont know if its worth it to swap frames with one on ebay. The upper engine mount right behind the stem is broken also. Also its an 04 model not 05

Sounds like you're going to be getting in over your head or deeper than you want to reach into your pockets. If the bearing race falls out at the bottom of the stem then I'm willing to bet the stem is out of whack. That means you'll need a new frame.
Take a set of calipers with you and see if the measurements at the headstock give you any clues as to whether or not it's tweaked.
If the deal is under 1k and you are getting a good set of wheels you could make money parting it out. Wheels you can easily get $300-$500,fuel pump$75-$150, ECM $50-$150, engine $1k-$1800, carbon parts $50-$100, plastic up to $500, wire harness $50-$150, brakes $150-$250 and the list goes on. But you'd probably have to sit on the stuff as you sell it little by little. My prices might not be spot on but do some more research and decide how much of a project you want to get into. There's a reason why the PO has sat on the bike for 10yr or so. If all the bike needed was a new set of forks, it'd be on the road.
That's just my 2cents

He wants $400 for the bike. Its an 04 and probably has less than 2000 miles on it. but it will need everything on the front, forks, headlights, gauges, ect. Plus the engine mount, and whatever the frame needs or a new one. He supposed to be collecting all the parts he has to it and letting me know. He also said it has a Race ecu and he has the stock one to go with it. He had another 03 XB9R he said $3000 for both bikes.
The frame is not a matter of the stem bearing falling out, the frame is actually broke around the lower stem bearing. The stem and triple clamps were still installed so it was hard to see the extent of the damage. I do not know if it could be welded and fixed.

two considerations:
1-it is a parts bike only. what does that mean to you? if you plan on buying a decent XB with a clean clear title you can use this $300 machine as a great source of parts and goodies. OR...if you have the time, patience, skill and knowledge to part it out then do that.
2-before you do anything either call your state DOT or go online and access their site. if this bike has been "totalled" and the title reflects same...or your states' vehicle information data base says same....or both....it quite possibly will be an insurmountable task getting it titled "street-worthy" again. you really want to know this if your intent is to repair and re-ride.

But if he swaps the frame with a good clean title frame, he doesn't have to worry about it being totaled or salvaged.

Where exactly is this bike at? If you decide it's over your head there are plenty of capable people on this site to fix or part it out. But that is super cheap, even for needing a frame. You could probably get a good clean title frame for a few hundred, forks for a couple hundred, headlight for a hundred, headlight modules for a couple hundred....

Well im probably gonna end up buying it and trying to fix the frame. Still waiting for him to gather all the parts. I think what really is making me on the fence is the fact that the gauges are missing so the mileage is unknown. I think it will be a winter project for me as i try to get it back on the road.

fix the frame?

Like lunatic said in laments terms....YOU ARE NOT FIXING THE FRAME MAN!!!!! The frame is the fuel tank, I would not TIG on that frame and even if that frame looks OK by eye it could definitely still b tweaked to a point of riding danger. Even sending it out to GMD Compu track would cost a ton of money, part that thing out or get a good steerable clean titled bike and keep that one for parts. LISTEN TO THESE GUYS ON THIS BOARD!!!!!

I would buy it for that price just to part it out, there is a 03 motor on ebay asking $1000 now, so if you can pick it up cheap, the parts are worth a lot more. also like lunatic said if you fix it you will have to get a reconstructed title, then as far as Im concerned I would never buy anything with a R title. once again, just my opinion, do what ever works best for you!
