Looking for Time 0122a - Decided to Torque to Spec

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

Yeah, the new guy always gets flamed to see just how thick his/her skin is. Don't take it too hard, rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

You aren't the first, and won't be the last to follow that torque spec and strip out a perfectly good swingarm. In our defense, we see a post similar to yours at least a couple times a month or so and fail to understand why anyone in their right mind, with even limited automotive mechanical experience, would use a torque wrench on any drain plug. I've personally been wrenching my own stuff since I was old enough to own my own transportation and before that, helping my dad with his stuff. Never used a torque wrench on any drain plug, always "wrench tight" was good enough.

More than one lesson learned here. Hopefully John (Lunatic) will read your apology, laugh a little, offer again to loan you the tool (if that's what you would still consider) and then you can get back on the road. If not, wrap that plug about 20 times with some teflon, hammer it in, caulk it, paint it and call it a day :)

Again, good luck with the fix

Thanks for the nice replies back. It's all good. Here in Maine the weather has been pretty cold and roads still icy so at least it gives me a little time to find or "bite the bullet" and just buy a kit. It would not be so bad - but I need rear tires on my two other bikes. So figure $200 or so per rear tire installed and then the kit (and labor to redo my threads) for the Buell. I am looking at $550. What I really need to do is probably sell one of my bikes and stay more within my means.

Any way thank you guys above.

By the way I was in the army - this is the first time I noticed "Rank." I was enlisted while in the army - so not sure about the Second Lieutenant thing. Sparky I see you are near the top of the food chain. Impressive.

Lol, not really. The more a member gets on and contributes, comments, etc, it accumulates towards the next higher "rank". Lunatic (John), oh9bolt (Jesse) are just 2 examples of members (there are many more) who have much more to contribute than I. Anyone would be hard-pressed to find a larger group of assholes with such an extensive Buell knowledge base as we have here. More importantly, imo, is the use of reputation rank as a barometer of how helpful and trustworthy a member is, or can be. It isn't infallible though as you can bump your own rep up or down (go ahead, try it).

Hint: if you are in search of an answer to a question, such as which oil is best or which tires should you buy, don't bother with the search feature at the top left header. Instead, type this into your browser followed by your particular topic of concern. It'll save you a bunch of time...and swearing.

Example:

site:buellxb.com stripped oil drain plug

Which should give you results that look sort of like this

Back on topic, welcome to the club (yes it's a club, not a gang) and I sincerely hope you get your issue sorted out. Keep us posted.

Thanks Sparky. You are a good guy and very helpful. Much appreciated. The Buell will be out and about soon enough. I was told by the dealer he may be able to use a metric kit to square me away. End of the day whether I am tightening the bolt with a 5/8 inch socket or a 17mm, really does not matter as long as it does what is supposed to do. If they can't I will buy the kit. I have seen how helpful people have been before so figured no downside to checking even though I would not blame anyone for not wanting to loan the kit out. I thought if I gave name of motorcycle dealer where I am going to have it fixed people would feel less worried about lending it out as it would be mailed to dealer and back from dealer. Any way thanks - I am not as may now be able to tell a big forum guy. I only come to this site like once or twice a year so if you don't hear much more from me that is why - signed Destined to Always Be a Second Lieutenant 😎
