I have an XB9S with the race kit on it. It has developed issues where at start up it struggles to idle, nearly stalling out occasionally. Also, while riding, if I am not on the throttle enough to accelerate but just to maintain speed, the power drops out for a half second at a time repeatably.

It has been at the HD/Buell dealership for nearly two weeks now and all they can come up with is that it is missing the plastic intake cover that I believe the race intake replaces...

They don't know what else to do for it so I am going to pick it up. I asked them to do a TPS reset just for kicks.

Anyone have this happen or have ideas on what might be the issue?

Have you done a breather re route? Or any other mods other than the race kit? What year?

at what rpm are you idling?

idle/stall is that only when cold or also when warm?

just wondering what you mean with 'the plastic cover the race intake replaces'

i have the same exact problem, i start it up and it idles really low and sometimes dies, the other day i was riding down the highway all normal, and then the light went dim and completely blacked out... well after a while im pretty sure i found the problem....it is most likely the battery, since it is EFI any minute variation in the output of the battery will seriously affect the performance. i recently checked the battery voltage and it is reading about 12v or less.. so im gonna replace it and see if it fixes it, which i hope it will... i will let you know if it does..

I bought the bike with the race kit on it. It also already had the breather re-route done. They combine and end with a small filter under the seat.

I bought it from a dealership the way it is, so I don't know if there are any more hidden mods.

It is a 2003 XB9.

It idles low, when it is hot out, and idles below 1000. Perhaps near 750-800 bouncing and struggling.

The plastic piece the shop wants to put on it is this thing: plastic intake

The way it looks right now is very much like this:Modded

I will have to check out the battery. I just got the bike back from the shop earlier today. Surprisingly it ran just fine on the 15 mile ride home highway.

PURRRFECT!!! i was right it was thye battery, i went down to advanced auto and bought a new battery. after a few hours on the trickle charge she started up like a champ without a hiccup.. the only problem i ran into was that i had to kind of re-route the positive cable, because the new battery was not an exact match, also it helps if you hookup your dobeck TFI correctly when you put it back on.. good luck i hope it works for you too.

P.S. if your clock on your odometer resets every time you start it, it's because for a split-second the battery goes dead when you try to crank her over.... :)

Don't bother having the shop put a factory airbox back on it. The modded/open airbox is not a problem

orion, leave the airfilter as is, it's a complete airbox delete kit.

check to see what the part# is on your ecm, should be able to say if it's a race ecm or not.
normally it should say 'for race use only' but some don't have that print on it.

if you have a race ecm and it's a '03 and has been standing at the dealer for a while , a reset wouldn't be a bad option.

my guess would be that your dealer goofed-up during pre-sale service.

that happend to me last night , my #1 cylinder spark plug wire was half off and was arcing off the block, and one of my vac lines came off. and when i started it up it was missfireing like a son of a bitch shootin a lil flame every now n then.
