So I put in a set of NGK(DCPR8EIX) spark plugs in my 03 XB9R. when I started it up it was isleing lower than what it was( it was at about 1000rpm)i know it is supposed to be 1100-1150. Anyway, after the plugs it started idleing at about 800 andwould drop down like it was going to die, but then come back up. I don't have an ecm cable, but I turned the idle control screw and go tthe rpm's up to about 1100-1200. now it will idle that high but still wants to drop down, but never dies. Any suggestions?

I think those may be wrong plugs..

Mine are NGK DCPR9EIX. yours are the 8.

Im not sure if this is why, but I just noticed. Make sure the plug boots snapped on all the way. both sides.

ya i made sure they were snapped tight because I had a little trouble with them going on, and I got the plug number off of the NGK website. UGGGHHH, I would hate to have to take those plugs out again. well at least the front plug. the first time i replaced them with stock plugs and stripped the hole, got it tapped, it has been making a noise kinda like an exhaust leak, thats why i changed them this time, i thought the plugs may have been improperly gapped or fouled. the bike runs fine besides the idle but its still making the noise and it seems to be coming from the front cylinder through the throttle body...

interesting. i would get a second opinion on the plugs, maybe those still work. I think the gap has to be .35 or something. To avoid threading once its started i wiggle it. If it wiggles pretty good then your good to go.

Maybe that is the problem, wrong plug, or wrong gap. but like i said get a second opinion it could be alot of things. But hopefully its something small like plugs

ii went to harley today and the guy had a listen, the noise is just the throttle body sucking in air. I did make sure the plugs where gapped right. i think i just need a TPS reset.

hey gtp, you are more than likely right about the plugs not being right. they fit except the front was tight as I said before. I don't understand the ddifferences in heat range, so if I can get the idle right, will it hurt to leave them in for a little while? I am really don't want to take that front plug out and it strip.

they should be fine. I wouldnt worry about it. but if you do a tps reset you might want to change them first. The DCPR9's I think are just a better burning plug. So basically a better spark, and a better running bike. The ones you have should work, as long as the threads are the same. As far as it stripping, the safest way is with a fuel hose or something to make sure it goes in and comes out straight, but like i said you need a wobble, if you do not feel some give, they are most likely cross threaded.

But imho I think the plugs you have should be fine, if thats what harley said too.

so i just crossreferenced the harley plug 10R12A on NGK's website and it came back DPR9EA-9, but I look it up my bike on their website and it calls for DCPR8EIX....what gives?

That is weird, I want to say they are the same type of plug the 9 just has a better spark..... but thats a guess.

here read this. It says the 8 is for hotter engines, so maybe those are just as good.

so the 9's are beter for the 2000+ bikes and the 8's are for the older models, so the plugs you currently have are the ones used on the older bikes. according to asb.

I bought the jardine, k&n air and ebr race ecm for my 09 12 firebolt. I tryed reseting the tps not sure if I did it right or if it worked. The bike sounds like crap when real cold and the idle is bouncing around at times when its warm. Ive put 500 miles on ran good but concerned about the idle and the bike idle down so low twice it killed the engine while bike was just idling in neutral. ?? TPS reset you hold throttle back and forth for a second, 3 or 4 times tryed both? idle has drop 950 1050 when warm it does that most of the time when warm? Any ideas
