anyone here went across the mackinaw bridge before? i hear its windy as heck & theres see-thru grating in the center 2 lanes that trips you out when you look down & see water alllll the way down there!

i haven't gone but i plan to next year,it's on my buell-to-do list! it would be fun to cross with fellow buellers!

the crazy thing is you can have someone ride your bike across for you if youre scared!

"If you are uncomfortable with driving your motorcycle across the bridge, arrangements can be made to have someone drive it for you."

I have not been over on a bike, but I have been over in trucks and cars lots of times. It can get pretty windy - in fact they will close the bridge at times if it gets to windy or they will limit what vehicles can pass. There is grating on the surface and it is tricky to drive on it in a car. You tend to wander around a bit. The grates arn't the whole distance though.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Just take it slower and stay off the grates (where possible) and you should be fine.

BTW a small car was blown off the bridge several years ago :D

I have...last year. No big deal really. But, I guess some people are just scared of bridges. I remember hearing, when I was a kid, about a Yugo that was driven over the side. Ouch![smirk]

I used to live up in the UP and have been over the bridge quite a few times. The outside lanes are paved, no grating (iirc), and like was previously mentioned they close the bridge if conditions are unsafe. Use your head, drive carefully, you'll be fine. Personally I WANT to dive over the grating on my bike, that is a long way down!

yeah, that was easy as hell. a couple people had me worried, told me they wouldnt drive over it... please, i didnt even notice it. i went over the grating both directions, it was fun, best part of the 8+ hour ride!

There is grates like that on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and it's nearly a mile long, very cool. Not to mention the crazy side winds you encounter.

wow, i searched these bridges on you tube.. very impressive... nothing like that in australia
