I popped my airbox cover off the day I got my bike, doing a once-over. I immediately noticed the small, servo-like device sitting in the depression in the top of the airbox itself. It's got like a cable horn on it like a throttle body has basically, but there's no cable attached and the corresponding cable tray depression down the side of the airbox is empty. A couple hoses run to the device however. It's got what look like mounting holes lined with brass bushings, but it's held in place only with a piece of upholstry foam shaped to fit in the airbox depression and fit around the device. ...what the heck is this thing and why does it appear half-connected? How do people do the airbox delete or FAST intake with this thing needing relocation? Maybe it's a stupid question...

hmmm..is it perhaps the servo that controls the exhaust valve based on vacuum? Since I've got a race exhaust, is that why there's no cable? Is this vestigal then? Can I ...remove it or what? Am I right even?

It is the servo that runs the valve in the stock exhaust. I have not fooled with the buells enough yet to know if you can remove it with out messing up the computer. I do know from reading though that you can eliminat the function with the ECMspy and then remove the servo. Hope this sheds a little light for you.

LOL, yea mine was completely gone when I got the bike. No need for it once you have the race exhaust.

so where do the hoses go, what gets removed exactly? Do I trace the hoses back to the other end and remove them?

Try just unplugging it to start off with and see if you throw up an Check Engine Light. If it does, than you don't have the Race ECM.

Which it's still not a big deal if you're running fine. You can just turn off the Exhaust servo option with ECMSpy and you can rip off the servo with no worries. (Some suggest using the emulators off ASB, but from a lot of posts I've seen, they don't seem to last too long.)

I've got the whole race kit, ECM, Exhaust, K&N so do I just take everything out then or what? And then cut that airbox lid down to just the clasps and top for the filter...

First do the "breather reroute". Then there are many ways you can do it. I just cut the top off mine, and bolted it through the breather hoses

see Dave I asked this in the airbox thread, I like the look of that method, but to start with mine's an 04 and I don't have bosses or structural ridges in mine. Next, I don't understand where the bolts will go, maybe that's because I haven't done the breather re-route yet? Does it eliminate the two hoses that come up into the airbox? I'd have thought just the one...
