So I'm changing the oil in my bike this weekend. Drain and change oil w no problem. Nothing out of the ordinary. When I take the plug out for the transmission however, besides the tiny little shavings stuck to the magnetic tip, there was also a big chuck of metal. It was a chunk about 2-3mm long and about 2mm wide(about the size of a flattened ball point pen tip. What could that have been, and should i be worried? Never seen anything like that before when changing my fluids.

I've wondered this myself. Heard many people, lots on this forum, say it's normal. I've found metal shavings in mine too when changing the primary and it seems to be considered normal - does anyone care to explain?

(Edit: I always just assumed it was because the primary is mostly metal wearing metal.)

Metal shavings are one thing. I believe they are normal. That's been the case on all the bikes I've owned. But a chunk on metal? Never seen that before.

How hard is it to change trans oil yourself? I did the oil a couple weeks ago, but now want to do the trans. I dont have many tools and saw something about a spring that needs to be loaded or something!? Sounded difficult. I like to think I am handy, but will pay to get it done if it needs crazy tools. Thanks for the help

It's not hard at all. Follow the manual if you're nervous about it. It's very easy. Once you crack the three screws off the opening you'll see whats in there. Just be carefull poking around in there. And get your bike as level as you can. Front and rear stands work best. If you don't have them, a 2X4 under the kick stand gets your bike up pretty straight. Just be aware it will be easier to tip over if it's up like that.

Has nobody had a chuck of metal in there? No ideas?

you need a T27 torx bit, a socket for the drain plug, an oil catch pan, funnel, oil, a way to keep the bike upright, and some time. Follow the service manul and all is well. Thats all you need for a tranny fluid change.

I have had a piece of metal like that come out of my primary. I think it was on my first oil change. I figured it was probably a small corner of a gear. I did accidentally shift without a clutch a few times. I wasn't too worried about it, I have seen much worse in cars and had nothing bad happen. Same with the bike, It now has almost 6k miles on it with no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't say that its normal but I really dont think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks guys, I have a nice ride planned today but will be changing the primary this weekend!
