I just picked up an 09 XB12Ss and it needs oil. HD is closed for the day. Bike has 100 miles on it. My questions are:

Is the stock HD oil synthetic? I assume no.
Does the stock oil type differ dealer to dealer?
Is it ok to top off with different brand as long as
it's still 20W50?

The manual just say it's H-D Multi-grade SAE 20W50 which sounds like standard oil to me (except there is mention to use "an oil certified for diesel engines").

Thanks

The oil in your bike now is standard SAE 20W50. Any good multi-grade 20W50 will work in A pinch. I don't know if continuing to mix different brands is A good idea. What concerns me is the break-in of your new bike. Lets see what others think.

During break in, that oil is going to get pretty dirty. The dealer will tell you that you can even mix with synthetic. I agree with Steve May, you can mix with another brand. It's just going to get changed in 900 miles anyway. If you're really concerned, just switch to synthetic. It's really easy to change. Plus, it will make shifting sooo much easier if you put synthetic in the primary

thanks for the feedback. I picked up both Valvoline 4 stroke/motorcycle 20W50 and "Mobile 1 VTwin Motorcycle 20W50" and a filter. Are you supposed to wait until the first service interval to switch to synthetic or can I just change it now?

Thanks

Most people leave it with stock oil because it's just getting changed so soon anyways. If you dont mind spending the extra few dollars for 900 miles of riding, go ahead and do it! You'll love it!

I'd definitely wait till after Break-in to start using fully synthetic. It won't allow your piston rings to wear properly to match the cylinder. Most any mechanic, tech., motorhead, will tell you the same. No synthetic till after break-in.

i noticed my oil was low around the 600m mark so i changed it completely with mobil 1 filter and mobil 1 vtwin syn instead of topping it off. I wouldnt mix it. It is VERY easy to change.
