Just got home from work and had the new Motorcyclist magazine (Sept. 2011) waiting for me. Looked on the front to see the words "2012 Erik Buell Racing 1190RS - Is this the best superbike ever?!" It has a 3 page article on the bike with nothing but raving reviews. And then, they go on in another article to name him 2011 Motorcyclist of the Year. Turns out this is the baddest ass machine you can buy after all. :p

I'm not exactly sure why I have the September issue, but anyways, if you see it out on the shelf check it out. [up]

I have to say...hearing that makes me wonder why Buell closed its doors. I mean, I get that EBR has kind of filled the gap, but why cut their other production bikes too...? maybe I just dont see the big picture, I dont know...

In case you have been under a rock, HD owned the "BUELL" name, and in the allknowing wisdom did not like having a performance bike next to there artwork, the only reason HD even bought Buell was to get younger, more athletic riders in to the show room, bait and switch, then Erik started winning championships, even beating the all glorious V-ROD at drag racing, HD said "No more". the old sportster motor had gone to the wayside, a new V-twin was kicking a$$, and they did not like it, HD owned all models of Buell, including the 1125, and said "Thou Shalt Not Compete With Thy God"

Well Uly, I wasn't under "a rock" when all that went down, but I was in "Iraq"....does that count? :p
Good one! There's more to the story than what Uly wrote. At first Buell was supposed to be able to make whatever he wanted but the CEO who purchased the majority of Buell was very soon replaced. The preceding CEO's ****** it all up for the brand. They always had a hand in everything. You cant do this and must do that.. Yada yada. Erik wanted water cooling from the get go, he was instrumental in the design of the Vrod motor then HD made it bigger and heavier, then said "We" want it. Erik said fine, it's not the way I wanted it anyway. Buells could have competed years ago if not for big brother cruiser overlords.

Let's not forget Harley 's outright refusal to let Erik build a fully faired sportbike. That is why the 1125R and 1125CR were basically "streetfighter" style bikes. Harley was too scared to compete head on with the Japanese and European bikes. That's also why Erik's first bike after being freed from his official licensed Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle shackles was an all out, full on, bar raising supersport. He could have built the 1190rs years ago if HD wasn't so concerned with their precious "image" and actually had the balls to take on the Japanese head to head. (I have absolutely nothing against the Japanese or their bike, btw. I don't want to come off as close minded or racist)

harley davidson: the American legend my great white a**. Cowardly pieces of crap is more like it.[mad]

Any other Buell articles out there? ( I know there are to all you smart alexs). This could be an awesome thred.

Thanks for bringing me back up to speed guys. I knew there was more to the story then the little bit I had managed to scrounge up, but didnt know just how extensive it all was.

I did know that "Big Brother" HD kept a tight leash on Erik...that he had a major hand in designing alot of the engines for Harley. Never knew the designs were not as he originally intended, but that's like any other time you take a marvel of engineering and give it to someone who doesnt fully understand it...they're going to screw it up.

I by no means am trying to stick up for Harley, cause I have no idea how deep that political hole may be in reality, but I can say that it "may" not have been so much a fear on their part to contend with the Japanese Superbikes...I think it might be more like "accepted reality". Harley has its own little niche in the world, and the other competitors have the sport-bike market pretty well nailed down. I think if Harley DID try to market their own full-fairing superbike, it would have failed as an attempt (possibly even if Buell was helping it) just because its not something you would expect from the Harley namesake, so buyers would be extremely reluctant to give it a go when they could get a Honda, Kawasaki, or Yamaha (companies well founded and reliable in the superbike market) probably for less.

I used to own a Honda 600RR, it was a great machine and definitely no discredit to the workmaship that goes into them (even though some of my personal convictions have an issue with legally selling bikes capable of 200+ mph to the general public). Personally, I love the Buells, and even if they were originally meant to be water-cooled engines, I like that they're still air-cooled. Living in a city with alot of stop-and-go, I know my CBR used to get pretty hot and very close to overheating/automatic shut-off...never had an issue like that with the Buell. I just really appreciate the design, concept, and engineering that went into them.

This still makes me sad.....he prototype xb that Erik wanted to make but Harley said NO. Buell "Diablo"
A turbo'd Buell pushing 150HP stock. Explaing the hole in the front fairing and the frame in the early xb's :(
