I got my 09 XB12R on Sept 11, I love it, its a lot of fun, however I want to do alot more stuff with it... I like the torque that it has, but it studders really bad from take off, and backfires terribly, anyone have any ideas of how to fix these issues... I'm taking it to get my initial service on Wednesday, I have 1600 miles on it now....

Congrats on the new bike!

The studdering and the backfiring can easily be fixed my doing the "breather reroute" mod. It'll cost you about $20 and an hour time. It also does not void a warranty

Thanks alot man, I'm going to try that stuff tomorrow, I just can't stand that damn studdering, sometimes it almost stalls out on me when taking off! Now I heard that an exhaust and k&n will help, which exhaust do most people recommend for look, sound, and performance? I would like to have one that is black to continue the whole black look on it...

Well do some more forum "lurking" first. From what I hear and read, the stock ECM already runs a bit lean, and the learning window on the ECM is too narrow to learn a K&N and/or exhaust. Someone else also pointed out that the later '08s and up have different ECMs that don't work with the current ecm spy programs.

I had the same problem of stuttering and hesitation on my '09 XB12Ss, I did the breather re-route and viola! I'd put in my 2 cents and say to use brass T's around the heat of the motor...

Hope this helps...

Welcome to the "Buell Life". Nice bike. Use the search feature often, its a great tool.

Alwways were your gear. Ride safe.

OK OK, so I did exactly as the top post said, and I have been driving it around for about 5 to 10 minutes (its raining here, I can't drive for too long...), and it still is popping on me when I pop the throttle back really quick, but I did notice that if I roll back on it a little bit smoother, but quickly, then it idles up smoothly... J/w how long do yall recommend letting it warm up before I ride on it??? Also, someone told me that if I get a K&N and a new exhaust as well as get the ECM programmed/flashed, then it will fix that problem, as well as help my throttle response... What do you think??? J/w as well, when I do pop the throttle back, there is a pretty good bit of smoke that shoots out of the exhaust...??? Is that normal for these bikes? It did that before I changed the piping crap, and it still does it... Anyone that can help would be great! Thanks alot!

Lefox said to let it warm up as long as it takes to put on your helmet and gloves. Then take it easy for the first 10 min.

You cant get the ECM reprogrammed yet on your 09. That being said, you cant get a K&N and exhaust either(well you can but you should be reprogramming to accommodate your new A/F ratio)

Double check the instructions for the reroute. It seemed to work fine for everyone else.

I can goose my throttle and start off the line faster than anyone I've ever rode with, I am pretty light, but it took some practice and getting used to on the buell. Maybe try more clutch.

Plus, you don't really need to pop it back too fast unless you like playing superman and getting thrown off the back.

no no no, I'm talking about while in neutral, and I'm just chilling there like at a red light or something, not while taking off...lol... That would definitely throw me way off of my bike.

hmmmmm... well that would make sense. I know mine does it every once in a while if I just rev it. If i want to rev it for someone, I'll just give it a little blip, then before the rpms drop, I rev it again.

These bike come from the factory running lean. It's probably just starving for air. Because you have a 09, you might still be in the learn in phase and it's still adjusting the a/f ratio. I know my bike got louder and ran better after break in, so I'm assuming your bike with it's learn in process will run even better with a few more miles on it.

They're still working on the ability to remap your bike. Once you can and do, it will run smoother, cooler, and just all around better.

congrats on the new ride! some key things to know with these air/oil cooled bikes:

- let it warm up for ~5min before taking off (yeah, its kinda long)
- DO NOT rev the bike or touch the throttle on warm up, its already adding fuel on its own (cold start enrichment)
- cruise for a few miles after warm up, no hammering yet
- once up to temp, go nuts :D

BUT

- try taking the bike out for a long cruise on the highway at ~3200 - 3500 RPM, hold it pretty steady and let the bike 'learn'. what it does is read from various sensors and makes subtle changes to compensate.
- the longer you steady cruise, the smoother it should get. (yes, this can be annoying)

if the above doesnt work or improve performance, something else is up.

ride safe!

Ok, so heres the new update, thank you guys for your help btw! I let it warm up just like typeone told me to do, instead of riding on the interstate really slow (boring as hell), I ride around the block and neighborhood at low rpms after it runs at idle for about 5 minutes! Now after I give it adequate time to warm up and cruise for just a lil bit, I take it out on the interstate, and romp into it like its going out of style! It runs great now, all of the studdering, even at neutral popping the throttle has went away, so I believe that I will continue to do that, thanks so much for yalls help!!!

Trevor,

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you should have to let it "warm up" for that amount of time. Until here lately, I was starting mine in the garage, gearing up (30 seconds), and taking off to work (50 degrees) with only occasionally stuttering and popping. You might consider getting the Iridium spark plugs. As a last thought, you are using High test gas (92 octane)?

hmm, well now no one told me that one... Well, I will try putting the iridium plugs in my bike, and maybe that help, I hope! But for right now, just letting it warm up for a little bit longer is working for me.... Does anyone know when I can buy an exhaust and k&n for my bike? Whenever I say when, I mean, when will the ecm flash or reprogram become available for me to get it done after I install everything on it??? Also, j/w does anyone know of some good grips that I can buy for the bike, right now I can't stand my factory ones because they are leaving black marks all over my hands when I ride, it gets on my nerves, especially when trying to go out on a date!!!
I took my bike in today for the initial servicing, a lil bit late, but none the less, I took it in, and I proceeded to speak with the parts guy, and he didn't know shit about Buells, they say that they are a HD and Buell dealer, but they didn't even have any buells, much less even know what parts I can order through them, and what the install prices would be! I told them more about my bike then they told me about my bike, again thanks guys for all of your posts on here, because I informed them of alot of stuff that they were not aware of, aka the rerouted piping, and etc.... Is there anyone on here near the OKC area, or know of any better dealer that is within 3 hours, I will ride it if I can get a dealer that knows what they are doing with my bike! Shit I had to ride 1.5 hours today just to get to the closest buell dealer... Anyways enough on my soap box, now back to the story... I also would like to see about getting a license plate relocation kit! Thanks for yalls help again!

I would hope any HD dealer should know about oil breather re-routes! Did they even know Buell uses HD motors? Wow...

I know most people are not aware of what California emissions has done to our motorcycles, but I took off my charcoal canister right away, and when I was mentioning it to the service dept, the writer said it was such a shame that I "lost" mine, and how they "vibrate off" most bikes... :D

The dealer I went to seemed pretty in tune with their customers and their cycles. Take a trip to Salinas, CA, those guys are AWESOME!

I definetly would not let your bike idle for more than a minute. I left my bike idleing for less than 5mins in my garage when I first got it, right after my 1k mile service. When I came back out the tops of my heads were glowing red..so...bad idea. Also I would buy but not put any exhaust or high flow air filter in until u can re-map your ecm or it will run SOOOOOPER lean and you really dont want that. If I were you Trevor id look into the "Drummer" exhaust, its REALLY nice and they make it out of your stock one so.

WHERE GLOVES YOU MAD-MAN!!!!! Whats the first thing your going to use to break your fall if you dump it???? Man even if im out riding in a tshirt and jeans in the middle of summer i ALWAYS wear gloves. You still wanna squeeze your own ketchup bottle right?

Man even if im out riding in a tshirt and jeans in the middle of summer i ALWAYS wear gloves.

See to me, thats crazy talk. I don't care if I'm going up the street to drop off a video, I'm wearing jeans, a jacket, helmet, gloves, and boots. I went to Fresno CA and rode around in the 110 degree heat wearing all that. I was hot as hell, but at least a would keep my skin if you know....

The way I see it is the guys the wear the shorts and t shirts, they make me look bad because they're gonna go down and kill themselves. That would make them a statistic, which in the end makes me a statistic. Don't be a statistic, wear your gear. Ok that was my rant
