So Wednesday, a friend and myself are driving the 5 hrs to go look at this bike.

I have the full intentions of buying it. Over the past two weeks, I have talked to the seller numerous times via text and calling. He's on point with every question I have. And his reason for selling seems quite legit(Divorce). Minus the spec ops, and the k&n the bike is stock.
Anyways, to the questions I have. Are there any special areas I should look at when I'm inspecting the bike? For example, the last bike I bought, (06 636) was notorious for leaky fork seals. I'm going to take it for a test ride, so I will check before and after. And also, in your opinion, what would you start at for a cash offer. Thanks for all the help!

id test ride it, check the rocker box for leaks. check the bottom of the primary case for leaks. made sure it shifted through all the gears smoothly. make sure rpms aren't too high or too low. thats about it.... id offer him 4800 cash on the spot.

Run it through all the gears, make sure you do a cold start, then restart when hot.

I'd work out the price BEFORE you show up. Much more fair to both the seller and buyer. Personally, if I were driving to 5 hours to buy it, I'd figure out what he gas is going to cost and offer him asking price minus that and maybe a little less for your time driving (killing a whole day).

Don't be the dbag who shows up and "only has $4000".

lol def do not be that guy. bring 5600 just in case, offer less at first and meet happily somewhere in the middle.

Haha def won't be that Dbag. In my own mind, I was thinking offering 4800 and playing hardball. I mean, I did drive all that way, cut a brother some slack lol.

i drove about 5 hours to get mine, it was also an 08, he was asking 4500 for which is a good deal don't get me wrong but i thought that i could save maybe a couple hundred, but when i got there he was firm on the price and wouldn't budge at all. so just my two cents i'd ask him before the drive just how firm on the price he is.

rogo: two quick things here.
#1-agree on a firm price with seller prior to making 10 hour round trip. if he's going thru a divorce as you say in all likelihood he's having good and bad days emotionally. catch him on a bad day, low ball him, and he'll send you packing with no bike and a $100 fuel bill all for naught.
#2-thomasville, PA is approx. 10 minutes west of york,PA on old rt. 30. there is a "mom and pop" airport there right on rt. 30 and tons of small businesses nearby. i ride thru there quite often and saw that firebolt sitting in front parking lot of a small eatery on a sunday afternoon late last october. it looked extremely nice as i rode by.

He was holding firm at 5300, I'm trying to get him to 5000. He said split at 5150. Gonna try to push him down the 150. That's gas and lunch/dinner. Thanks everyone.
