Hey guys, I need to replace some hardware on my bike that is corroded/rusted and looks bad. I know certain hardware is fairly critical(such as some pinch bolts, etc) and am wondering if it is ok to replace stuff with stainless hardware from Ace. Specifically the axle and triple tree pinch bolts, the swing arm brace bolts, and brake caliper hardware. Also what about the rear rotor and pulley hardware? Does this stuff need to be grade 8? I want to make sure I replace it with something that won't fail.

Thanks.

i prefer zinc plated grade 8. especially for the rear rotor, pulley bolts, and caliper bolts. stainless is weak and prone to galling. I would avoid.

edit: a note on the torx bolts in the rear sprocket and rotor. the torx head is capable of handling more torque before it strips than a regular socket head. if you were to replace with an allen head especially stainless i think it would strip out on you pretty quickly. especially when you try to remove them again.

Thanks for the reply. I went to Ace and got some stainless stuff for the controls, etc.(stuff that's not vital). I'm trying to figure out what to do for the vital stuff that needs to be strong. I'll try to find some of what you mentioned. Anyone know of a website you can order bolts and stuff from?

Well the sites I've looked online don't seem to have the stuff that the local hardware store doesn't have. So I got a lot of what I need, but am missing some more still.

I'm thinking I might need to head over to daytona nut and bolt, they have a lot. Just far away...

do you have the parts catalog for your bike? sizes and material/finish is listed there by part number, follow that and you'll be fine...took my catalog with me to Ace and got everything I needed recently, for finish appearance application, I went with stainless hardware, the structural stuff got what was called for

So I've been plugging away at replacing hardware, there's soooo much I still need lol.

Do you guys think stainless steel will be ok for the axle pinch bolts? Factory used grade 8(zinc plated I assume). But I'd think SS would be ok. Opinions?

I'm still having trouble finding a lot of the grade 8 zinc plated hardware. Going to keep looking online.

Actually looks like ASTM A574 is stronger than grade 8, what do you think?

From fastenal:

The following example will demonstrate the effectiveness of tempering:
ASTM A193 Grade B7, SAE J429 Grade 8 and ASTM A574 Socket Head Cap Screws are all made from
alloy steels. In fact some alloy steel grades can be used to manufacture any of the three final products:
such as 4140 and 4142 alloy steel. The final mechanical properties are the following:
ASTM A193 B7
• Tensile Strength: 125,000 PSI minimum (2-1/2-inch and under)
• Yield Strength: 105,000 PSI minimum (2-1/2-inch and under)
• Hardness: HRC 35 Maximum
SAE J429 Grade 8
• Tensile Strength: 150,000 PSI minimum 9
• Proof Strength: 120,000 PSI
• Yield Strength: 130,000 PSI minimum
• Hardness: HRC 33-39
ASTM A574 Socket Head Cap Screw
• Tensile Strength: 180,000 PSI minimum (through ½”), 170,000 PSI minimum (above ½”)
• Proof Strength: 140,000 PSI (through ½”), 135,000 PSI (above ½”)
• Yield Strength: 153,000 PSI minimum
• Hardness: HRC 39-45 (through ½”), HRC 37-45 (above ½”)

Thanks Route.... so I am correct that these bolts marked as ASTM A574 are good for use for the drive pulley, brake rotor, calipers, etc ("structural" stuff) ??

And it's ok to go overkill, right? Like if 12.9(170,000) is the only thing available, that's ok to use, right?

Thanks for the help guys. I found everything I need on that site except the pulley and rotor bolts. So all I need now is the rear rotor and drive pulley bolts. If anyone can find them(they are torx botton head machine screws) let me know, thanks.

Sorry rear rotor, not front. I already ordered a new hardware kit for the front rotor from EBR. I need the six bolts for the rear rotor and the six bolts/washers for the rear pulley.

Thanks though.

I can't find them anywhere. ASB has the pulley bolts and washers but I'm not payin $30 plus shipping for 6 bolts.
