i was rear end a few weeks ago on my 08 firebolt 1203cc . MY insurance guy or the guy that comes out and looks at the bike calls me up and tells me he is going to try to paint the plasic or buff out the scratches on the black tail plasic and also he tells me that it is paint all ready on there that is why it is black i asked him is he joking . that is a molded black you cant paint it at all. and this is my insurance this **** is not going to happen non of this is my fault

get an estimate from a local harley shop, and have them talk to your insurance guy. or take it to a different motorcycle shop at the very least.

ya i live in rockford il but my bike is at ukes hd in wisconsin that is where i am from and i know it is not the the hd i used to work there when i was in high school. i called ukes a few hours ago and even the manager tolled him that it cant be done. the guy says he can do it

Plastic and paint can be sanded buffed to remove scratches as long as they aren't deep gouges, so I don't understand why it can't be done.

sorry i am on my phone and it is auto correcting it and i see it is doing a great job.(not). i should reread it first but i am at work

I think his concern is that the bike comes from the factory with black plastics by way of the dye in the plastic, not paint.

I'm guessing he's concerned that the dude is going to paint his plastics black, and he doesn't want painted parts. He wants OEM

i'm assuming the same thing..

don't ask... demand that they replace the rear pod. it will be cheaper in the long run if they do anyway.
the cost to remove, repair, repaint then reassemble = $500+ to replacing it with a new pod $250
unless your trying to pocket the money and repair it yourself.

i know this is a dumb forum but i just wanted to see what other people would say in my shoes.

the way i look at it is that if it was not there b4 i got rear ended it should be replace with new parts. not covering it up with paint or buffing it out. i am not trying to get a new bike out of it. this bike is my babe, i take batter care of this then my girlfriend lol .all i am asking it to replace parts that where damaged. i do not think that is asking a lot but that is in my eyes

The problem is simple: the insurance covers until a certain amount. Repair work is mainly covered but new parts NOT, some insurance companies even have a certain statement in their policy which u accept when u sign the deal them. is like it is... One way out is to ask what is the max amount they are able to compensate and pay the rest for new plastic parts... powder coated staff is a different thing, there are methods to repair this... but no details.

What you're asking is perfectly reasonable. There is NO WAY I would let them paint the plastics. Since you were the one that was hit I say that gives you the right to demand that your bike is fixed properly. Painting a molded colored plastic tail is NOT "fixing it poperly" in my eyes.

since you were not at fault, you can demand that they replace it with new parts, they can keep the old ones.
