hi guys
mark from australia. about to buy an 03 XB9s. the strange aspect to this bike is that it has done a whopping 40,000kms, yet has a brand new motor in it with it just run in. i verified how this happened at the Harley dealership that it is selling at. Was due to the prior owner wanting to go from stock to a massive list of mods including aftermarket cams / internals to be done. when it was done the motor died on the dyno tune, the owner then did a dummy spit and wanted it all back to standard to trade in for a new XB12, and Harley came to the party with a brand new motor.
my question is, what should i be looking out for on a 03 XB9s thats done 40,000kms with a new motor?
appreciate any advice....

I have an 03 9R with 26,500 miles on the original motor, so I wouldnt worry about that too much, especially if its new.

A couple of things to look for off-hand...
does it have the '04 pulley upgrade.
There was a headlight upgrade done later.
There was also a kickstand upgrade done.
Check to make sure it has orange bearings and not black ones.
Does it have '04 mirrors, the '03s were very short.
Does it have the factory race kit; K&N filter, race muffler and race ECM.

Thats about all that I can think of right now, I know there are some other things. Maybe some more seasoned buellers will chime in.

Also, if you do buy it check this link out, lots of valuable info and mods.

Hmm - on bearings:
didn't Buell go black - then orange - then changed again back to improved (but totally confusing) black?
My '06 has black. Steering head bearings worth checking, too.
Did the dealer give it a thorough going-over? Did it get its 32,00 km (20,000 mile) check-up: Fork oil change, primary oil change and adjustment, brakes (fluid, pad wear)?
Most of the rest would be covered with a new motor.

Be sure the suspension settings are right for your build and riding style. Settings are in the owners manual.

Something else to add to your shopping list: frame pucks and axle sliders. these will protect your fuel tank/frame and the expensive bits like your fork and swingarm, if the bike has even the smallest little tip-over.
Welcome!

thanks alot guys,

fantastic advice. I have been told the 04-07 models are recommended over the 02/03 due to a number of little things like mentioned above. no big issues but little things that start on the right foot.

love this forum by the way.... passionate people sharing their insights...

Look into one of these too,,,P/N Y1312.02A8 Voltage regulator connector Service kit
If your XB is pre-'08, you need to replace your #77 connector before it costs you a fortune. At the very least you should inspect it before you replace a voltage regulator
