Hello, ladies and gents, my name is Paul and I am creating this thread so as do introduce myself to the forum. I was recently looking for a new bike when I came across a 2003 XB9S with less than 6,000 miles. I do realize that it was the first product year for the model and probably has it problems, but I got it because it was stock and had low miles as I plan on using the bike mostly as a commuter. I had a couple questions that can hopefully be answered by the members here whom have the knowledge I seek. I have been told the drive belt on the 2003 was and issue and that it would be a good ideal to upgrade to another one. What all do I need to change if I wanted to do this? I also wanted to know if there is any other maintenance I can perform now as preventive maintenance rather than waiting for it to become corrective maintenance? Any information and help will be much appreciated and will not go to waste.

Thanks,
Paul

Under general motorcycle chat there is a thread called 150+ helpful Links... You will Find the belt conversion topic. And welcome. If you do your own matinance and oil changes.. the torque spec in the service manual is Incorrect for drain plug and will strip your drain hole threads so use a wrench and tighten it by feel. Use blue thread lock on all bolts, these bikes will rattle **** loose. And nice bike. My xb9 is an 03 with about 30k on it and it's still as badass as my 09.

Welcome. These bikes are pretty much maintenance free aside from oil changes, btw do NOT over tighten your drain plugs EVER! The belt upgrade is a good idea if its not been done. I think americansportbike.com has that.
Good luck and safe journeys

welcome to the forum, dude hold off on that belt conversion and spending your cash. I also have an '03 9s which I bought 7 years ago with 2500 miles, she now has over 63k and running the original belt. she's used as a daily ride, I don't ride wheelies or do burnouts on her. stay on top or close as possible to the maintenance schedule in the manual and you'll be fine. either download the manual from the link below the Buellxb header or buellmods.com and if you can get your hands on a parts catalog, jump on it. if not, let me know if you need part numbers.

@ all of the members above ...

Thanks for all the useful information and also for the link to the thread of helpful links. I think I will hold off on messing with the belt as it is not a problem as of now. I picked up some new plugs, oil, and filter and plan on taking care of that this weekend. I was also thinking about purchasing a new airfilter, but I am unsure if I should stick with a stock one or get the K&N one.

I also wanted to know if anyone could let me know if other than basic stuff like checking brakes, fluids, looking for leaks, so on... if there are common problem areas I should look at on the bike.

Thanks and safe riding,
Paul
