well just picked up my new to me 05 XB12r! overall she is clean as all get out and boy do i love the bike however it does have its quirks. it needed a dipstick, apparently it broke and there is just a little nub, needs a front tire, and really thats pretty much it. however i do have one question.....are halls bikes VERY tough to shift? maybe its because i am used to japanese bikes that seem to float between gears. this sucker i definitely have to be forceful when changing gears. i filled the bike both engine oil and primary with mobile 1 full synthetic 20w 50.

so far on order i have

DCPR9EIX
K&N air filter
Oil Dip Stick

the exhaust is said to be a "ground pounder"? sound about right? not sure but she sure sounds good. i want the carbon jardine setup though.....

that's a great looking firebolt. i have used virtually every primary/trans fluid known to mankind in buell primaries and found amsoil 20-50 to be the slickest shifting but you should be fine with the mobil 1. adjust your clutch cable and clutch pack. i have posted on here many times how to properly perform it but in essence you want to do it on cool room temp motor...slide up rubber gaitor on cable at front of motor...loosen barrel till plenty of slop at lever...remove derby cover...remove locknut and spring as one unit....turn OUT slotted clutch adjustment screw until resistance if felt then turn in 1/2 turn....replace locknut and spring and derby cover....adjust cable barrel until you have approx. 1/8th inch play measured at cable ferrel/perch assembly. when properly adjusted and correct 1 quart of primary fluid a buell when up to temp will shift virtually as smooth as any japbike V-twin.

thats exactly how i adjusted her so i will see how she does tomorrow when i ride her! thanks for the quick response!!!

also, if i just blip the throttle, while on the side stand or at a red-light, if i just blip it quickly she sputters and pops like she is loading up on fuel. i have the k&N filter on order so feel I'm going to need to retune. question being, is there any way to tune on a mac other than running a partition on my hard drive? is there somewhere i could get my bike tune in Louisiana? i plan to do the breather mod as soon as my filter comes in to help clean it up too.. let me know what y'all think!!!

Rode to work and the tranny was MUCH better with an adjustment and new fluids.

The check engine light randomly comes on and goes off while cruising. Any ideas?

XB's generally speaking don't like that.

check the simplest things first. a battery with low voltage or dirty/loose/frayed cables will kick the CEL on and off at random due to voltage drop. charge and clean and tighten both the terminals and cable ends. the XB electrical system and ecm is very sensitive to correct battery voltage.

The long stroke & heavy flywheel don't give the same instant throttle response as you might be used to on I-4 Japanese bikes.

The gearbox was revised in '06 to shift better, so yea, the older ones can feel sloppy if you're used to Japanese gearboxes (although Honda knows how to make a clunky shifter when they want to too!). As noted above, keeping the clutch adjusted & using the right fluid helps a lot.

The transmission is MUCH better after working on it last night. Talking night and day difference (no pun intended lol)

As for the cel I'll definitely get on that and report back! Thanks!
