I've been using a dark smoked tint and love it, it just sucks at night and I always forget my clear one. I just got the transitions visor and it's working great ( it auto darkens ).

he would have... Im totally off my game whit that shit .. Im going to keep using it and see if I adapt to it.. I think its just distracting me..

Dude, it was a GROM and he totally cut a good light!

JK, It may be a difference in it being polarized or not? For $40 I bet it's polarized…
My dark tinted shield is on 90% of the time and no problems for this old guy. In fact, when I lived on the west coast I never used a clear one, but since they haven't heard of streetlights east of the Mississippi I started putting it on at night.

Side question. How easy is your Icon to swap shields? I sold an Arai I loved because the system sucked, The Shoei RF-1100 swaps like butta[up]

Icon swaps real easy.. the new one I picked up a few months back was a lot better then the other Icon I had before this one. They were both Alliance helmets but the newer ones are a lot better then the older ones. the fittings and features are lot "crisper" .. the details are better and they look and feel lot more expensive then the previous ones.. dollar for dollar I think they are offering more than the other brands right now. Id love to pick up a Icon Variant but they want a fucking ton for the real nice ones.. Ill wait till they come down a bit in price, they must be the rage somewhere right now looking at the price they are asking for them. I saw them at one of my Local dealers and they looked real good in person.

I have a "dark" smoked visor on my shoei and it's great. I've even ridden with it on local/highways at night. But when the over head street/highway lights become scarce and I'm left alone with my headlights, things get a bit hairy. I got caught out on my way to San Francisco on PCH in the dark and it sucked balls. At the moment if I go out on a super long ride, I carry my clear visor along. Until the new shoei transitions visors are out and go down in price, this will be my backup plan.

Some dark smoke helmet visors are better. Could be the shape, quality of material? Never used an Icon but I have dark smoke on my helmets and some are better than others. My Shoei RF1100 Merciless is unreal great for clarity. My Arai Profiles is pretty close and my Simpson Outlaw Bandit, not quite as good but still a great fit and awesome looking helmet. In other words, it just may be the curve and material, not all are same. I had a Harley Modular and put a dark shield on it. Hated it. Not sure if it was that made their helmets but if you ever tried a shoei dark shield, u will not believe it! Its like no shield at all.

I really like the idea of the internal drop down tinted shield, but why aren't any of them DOT approved?
And Ya, Gloom. I'd love to get a variant too[up]

OK boys, MY BAD!... I installed the visor and cleaned it off... forgot to clean the inside. Icon had a light coat of some kind silicon protectant on there to protect it in the packaging. Im getting so old and farsighted that I could not detect that coating. Pulled the visor, cleaned off the inside and the image quality got a whole lot crisper. Went out for a ride and had no problems at all...
If I had the eyes I had at 20, I would have noticed it.. when that protectant was on there I could see but the image wasn't as crisp... it was throwing me off.. no wonder I was riding like a pussy.. I couldn't see clearly.. FUCK Im getting old! [down]

My guess would be because the slot that the shield retracts into, prevents the interior styrofoam liner from bonding to the exterior shell for much of the top/frontal area of the helmet, thereby making it a weaker design(?).
