new to bikes..xb12r

hi everyone

My name is mike and i'm new to the bike world and wanted to ask a simple question i couldn't get answered by doing a search. I'm really intersted in a xb12r, but wanted to know if it would be a ok bike for someone with not alot of experience. thanks

Hmmm, first, welcome Mike!! Second, your going to find alot of mixed feeling about this question. I for one do not feel its exactly a starter bike at all. We're taking 1203
cc's of pure American brute. It is a very torquie bike that could and has scared a few people. Their are worse bikes to begin with on this same token. I think it depends from person to person though, if you havent ridin in years then I would look at something with a lot less power and get one. After you have decided it time for a fearless beast like the 12R...ease into it and be carefull. I think that the XB9R falls into this catagory also.
But if you are still a young guy who believes you'll live forever than go for it.. I did..about 15 years ago, still here, just slower when I walk, and faster when I ride.[up]

thanks for the reply... I know what you mean because i have a friends that say go for it, just respect the power of the bike and i have other friends who think i should start out on something with a lot less power..i'm still a young guy(24)i'm just weighing my options right now..thanks

You can get into trouble on any bike...be it a 50cc Moped or a 1300cc Hyabusa. Doesent matter. Get what you are comfortable on, something that you will actually "want" to ride. Just be sure that whatever you get you'll be able to fix relatively cheaply. Im not saying you will crash but almost everyone will tip a bike over at least once in their riding life Lets face it, "S*** Happens" to all of us Just be smart, respect the bike, ride within your limits and not your buddy's. Id say go for it. This is only my second season riding street and i picked up the 08 XB12R at the start of this season. Rode a yamaho fzr 600 all last year, and let me tell ya this bike is a joy to ride compared. Buy what u want and dont settle, it'll ruin ur whole experience. Iv rode plenty of jap bikes, and the Firebolt is pretty close to perfect in my opinion. Jap bikes will get u in acceleration and tops speed, but honestly who needs to go 200mph? Id rather cut a corner at 90+

you can go for the bike, but if you get cocky or overconfident, the bike will make you pay...and if you're lucky, you will walk away from it.

that's not just for the 12r, it's for every bike...one is just more forgiving than the other

I would second what was said by LeFox. It isn't so much the bike, as the rider. If you get cocky or stupid your going to get hurt. I would call myself an experienced rider, and the torque of my xb12x can be scary. I've found my front tire in the air more then once when I wasn't trying it.

I would ask how big you are... height/weight. You may find an xb9 a little better suited to a beginning rider. (a beginning rider under 200#)It starts out with a little less snort, but once you gain experience it doesn't take much modification to get it running with the 12s.

i'm 6' and about 225..so i figured the 12r would be better.. thanks for all the advice...i'm pretty sure i'm going to be picking up a 12r very soon

Yeah, at 200+ myself I found the 9 a little under powered. But it still carted my ass up to 100mph in a big hurry.

Either way you go they are a blast to ride.

I aggree with everyone . Like to also say get what you think and know you can handle and want you want to ride . BE A RESPONSIBLE RIDER for yourself your loved ones and for all us other riders out there people in those mobile cages wont see you or care if they run you over , be prepared for the worst. if you want a buell you WONT be satisfied with anything else , I bought my buell XB12R in april (my first bike ever) to me a buell is like no other bike alotta japanese bikers hate along with harleys hardcore bikers, so your in class of your own , but be prepared for the attenion it gets no one usually know what it is and they're always awstruck . I'm 5'7", my bike might be to tall for me but i plan on lowering it when i can , and i love the torque(feel like my 04 svt cobra only 2 wheels & alot lighterbut the cobra has higher top speed , but i dont ride the buell for the speed i ride the buell for everything else it does ) (just becarefull and mindfull of all that power)
rider within your LIMITS you ONLY live once.
also I know now I would not of been happy riding any thing else. only wish i could afford one of each model and would like have my first buell choice of an X1 lightin millennium edition.

Hey ya'll I have the 9s but at the same time I'm only 5'9 140lbs, I can say that going from dirtbikes to my 9 was one helluva wakeup, I thought I'd be good because dirtbikes are built for torque as well..I was wrong, first day I decided to play around and almost dropped it over backwards, good thing is I already knew how to handle that and tucked in close to the bike and dropped the throttle. I would have considered myself an experienced rider at that point in time, not so much anymore. Just try out the 9 and the 12 and get the one that feels right for you. If you don't get the 12 right off you can always upgrade later.

I went ahead and bought an 08 artic white xb12r. I'm really happy with the bike. I'm still learning but so far its been great...thanks for the advice everyone

My first bike was a brother hand me down 1990 kawasaki zx-10. I think its all about staying in your limits. I remember my brother telling me at the time to keep it under 5K and I did just that for at least a year or two of riding. The 12R has a lot of torque but i find it pretty predictable riding. Go for it and be gentle on it for a year or so.

im new to the forum and i deffenatly agree with everybodys comments i started riding last year and my first bike was a 07 zx-14 and it is really comfortble on the high way and long rides but im looking to trade in for the 08 xb12r because of insurance purposes.

i maybe maken a mistake but im also thinkn about just selling my zx-14 and geta rc51 but i really love the xb12r i dont want to do anything until i can compare the two. can anyone help me with this decision
