HOWDY from Texas ! I Just picked up my 1st Harley. One of the only ones I'd ever realistically want. A very clean 99' X1 EFI for a song. Blown out rear head gasket. already got back piston head off. Had thoughts of only rebuilding the back piston. Was told not to by a Harley tech buddy in another state. Bike has 20k. Very clean motor. Next steps, pull the front head & jug if I am going to rebuild the front one as well as the back. Check jugs, heads, valves, hone, New rings, insulate exhaust, perhaps put a better EFI controller on it. Performance Muffler, I need a Front Rotor, valve cover breather bolts, a gasket set, a ring set, a new clutch cover, ( an eagle one? ) spring compressor......... ??

Harley bought buell. Or a least a majority of it. Buell is it own brand. It's like this, every Harley dealership sells Harleys, but not all Harley dealerships sell buells or there parts.

Welcome to the site....

I would suggest a couple upgrades to do when the engine is apart. Do yourself a favor and have a look at the oil pump drive gear. If it has not been upgraded do it while the heads are off. Im guessing its not and when the original teeth break you have problems! Also, verify what primary chain tensioner you have and if its the original, upgrade that as well. 2 other popular upgrades to the '99 bikes, are the Y front exhaust hanger, and XB rocker boxes. The XB rocker boxes are a 2 piece design instead of the 3 pieces. They also eliminate the sides breather holes / unbrella valves and use top mounted PCV valves-
As for the EFI.... get yourself a copy of ECMSpy and load a race map once you upgrade the exhaust and air filter.

Good luck on the project!

20k original miles. Where is the oil pump drive gear ? i dont have a manual yet. guess i have some looking to do. The forum wouldnt let me post pictures on my initial post. Kept throwing em out.

random when they break, right?

Ill have to go look that up, and how to.

That parts wonky, I could tell.. it had a broken aftermarket muffler. I picked up the cheapest stock muffler I could find, im semi-regretting that. I have Remus on bmw 1200cc and I love it.

I ordered a used CNC machined front motor mount. This ones was cracked. motor was hanging a bit.

Thats ****ing sweet. Too late though, I already ordered the new side breather kit.
This builds on a budget. I have 8 bikes. It was a $500 buell that needed a few hundred in work turning out to be $1000 in parts and mucho labor. I dont mind, sexy ass bike and it looks like if I ever sell it, around here they are bringing $3500-4000.

im looking, that is a bit of ordering, Ill start working on it, I love flashing & chipping cars.
nobody sells it all put together already ?

Good luck on the project!
THANKS !

Shes sitting at the dealer getting 4 Recalls fixed for free. Rode fine going to the dealer. The dealer doesnt know how long it will take for them to get the parts. . Instead of tearing into the motor Id rather just hunt a sportster motor to build up and then swap motors if something goes wrong. The oil looks clean, shes not burning oil in the first 100 miles. I was a little bit over budget already on this quick restoration without going into the bottom half of the motor and upgrading more there. As it is I need a rear shock or to rebuild the crappy stock 99 rear shock thats on the bike.
