Quick question for you all. Just purchased an 06 XB9SX with roughly 10,000 miles on it.... bone stock. Got my first real chance to put some miles on it today. Temps ranging from 70-80 degrees. I noticed during some spirited riding that my cooling fan kicked on, and stayed on for roughly 30-45 minutes before we stopped for a break and I shut the bike off. After I shut the bike off, the fan continued to run for about 2 minutes, then shut off like its supposed to.
This is my second Buell. I had an 03 Firebolt a few years back, and the fan rarely came on while I was actually riding the bike, but usually came on after I shut the bike off. Is it normal for the fan to stay on that long while riding? I put the bike into 5th and just cruised at about 55-60mph, thinking it would cool down a bit and the fan would shut off, but it didn't. Otherwise, the bike runs great with no problems, I am just concerned as it stays on so long on this bike, but didn't on my last one. I am pretty sure the ECM has never been touched as far as updates are concerned. I know on the 09-10's they had an update which changed the fan logic to make it speed sensitive and what not, but my fan continued to run no matter how fast I was going.

Any ideas? i just don't want to prematurely wear out the fan with it running so much.

Thanks

You probably know these numbers already, but:

Fan On Fan Off
Key ON 220° C (428° F) 180° C (356° F)
Key OFF 170° C (338° F) 150° C (302° F)

With spirited riding it is expected, even with the 70-80 deg. temps, in my opinion. And, there is a hysteresis for the fan operation. It turns On at 428 F, but it doesn't turn Off when you cool to 428 F again ; the engine has to cool down another 72 F before the fan turns off!

add the uly comfort kit right side scoop assembly. all 5 components about $60 retail thru any H-D dealer. best thing you can ever do for your motor and will virtually eliminate the both the engine and fan running at the same time.

do you happen to know the part number for the comfort kit? I have a local ex Buell dealer who still has a pretty good supply of Buell parts in stock.

Thanks

The Ulysses Rider Comfort Kit is M1907.1AK, but you only need the scoops from that kit, which you can order separately.

Scoops are:
M0851.7AA - SCOOP, AIR, ENGINE, RIGHT
M0852.7AA - SCOOP, AIR, ENGINE, RIGHT INNER, DOM
AN1005.3FSS - screws

Think these parts are still available from a Buell dealership? I know you can order off Ebay and ASB, but I would rather get the factory parts.

found them at Manchester HD. they would have to order them, but should still be available. $30.40 for the scoop and $25.38 for the back plate.

when i said 5 components i was not referring to all comfort kit components. the inner scoop...outer scoop...and 3 screws equals 5 components. ready posted correct part #'s. retail is about $60 for all 5 pieces.

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it. I also plan on flashing some race maps to the ECM, so hopefully that will cool things down a bit too. I know on my last Buell, which had a K&N and a modded exhaust, it ran substantially cooler than stock when I added the maps, even with the exhaust and filter. Just gotta find me a cable now.
