Hey all I just picked up a new ( to me ) 03 buell xb9s today. I have been riding imports sense I was 17 starting on 250 honda vtr ands ending with a zx7r now I wanted 2 move on 2 a new world. So I just had a few questions
The bike has a custome exhaust on it witch is more or lees straight piped with one baffle so I'm sure I needs some sort of fuel mapping done and it came with the thing the guy called fuel programmer it labeled dobeck performance tfi? Never heard of it and was cerious what it is and how it works
2 on the speedo the is a lillt button with a r by it what's it for?
3 plan on riding the wife on the back but man that's a small seat even tho we r smaller people is ther some sort of back reat that I can but or hand grips so she has something sturdy to hold on to.
4 what r some things that go wrong or I should keep on eye one on these bikes? Like I said this my first vtwin bike and hae no clue about them
Thancks in advance

Mike

Welcome!

1. the "R" button is the reset buttom.
2. you can buy different aftermarket seats for more padding but not sure about actual size
3. hand grips I'm sure are possible. Maybe the uly grips?
4. I haven't had any issues with mine so I couldn't say what to look for.

Welcome! My bike is an 03 9s as well.

1: Not sure about the fuel programmer, but the ECMs in these bikes are reprogrammable and you don't need a special programmer for them. You can download the program called ECMspy, download the race map for free, and then buy a $30-40 cable and upload new fuel maps to your bike yourself.

2: Not sure but I'm gonna guess it's the reset button. Is it under the speedo and tach? It's probably the one that switches between the clock, odometer, and trip odometer, or it will reset the trip odometer.

3: the seat itself really isn't that much smaller than a normal seat, it's just the lack of bodywork around it that makes it small. I've never seen anything as far as a backrest or grab rails. I bet if you're creative with tools you could make something with a random backrest on ebay and a custom bracket that bolted onto the tail somewhere. You'd have to get creative, although if she holds on tight you should be ok.

4: no real problems. The belts and pulleys were upgraded to thicker ones in 04, so it's common for people to put the 04 setup on their 03, but you can also just keep an eye on your belt and make sure you replace it before it starts to look bad. Some of the earlier bikes also had problems with the sidestands giving out, also fixed on the newer sidestands. I'd say if your bike has made it from 2003 all the way to 2011 and not broken the sidestand, you'll probably be ok.

post up some pictures when you get some!

Welcome!! Looks like the other guys gave you some good info! Enjoy the bike!

Thanks for all the advice. I have a full shop with every tool possible so I'm sure I and make a nice set of hand grip for the wifey. As for the the tuner did a little reasearch seems to be a decent little piggy back fuel tuner ill give it a try and if it don't work to well ill look in to the ecmspy. Is ther a lnk some one can point me to for the cables? Allso any base maps for a k&n filter?

Thanx guys I got about a month before I can get this pig out on the street sense here in western new york we r still getting snow so I'm gonna get it tuned up and work on this ecmspy see what I can come up with

Hey if you get creative SAFETY FIRST, you could get some Tig welding, Some company should be able to fix up something. the Ulysess has those options. Aluminum is light and pretty strong . Make sure you can get to other items to be able work on it here and there. AND Welcome to the Forum.
