Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong forum but I couldn't find the XB9S listed anywhere so I figured I would just go with the "Lightning" forum.

My name is Houston and I am writing from the S.F. Bay Area in The People's Republic of Kommifornia.

I purchased a 2003 XB9S about a month ago and have been riding it around and getting used to it...the only other bike I have owned is a Blast. The previous owner had the suspension set pretty tight but once I adjusted it to my weight it rides awesome.

The bike has a Jardine pipe on it that is blowing out my left ear. Also, the other night while riding with some friends they mentioned that I was blowing flames out of the exhaust and that I was getting a lot of back fires.

Questions:

1) Does anyone know the decibal levels for the Jardine, the Buell stock racing muffler and the stock muffler? I know there is a part I can get that will quiet the Jardine down a bit but I am trying to figure out the base decibals for these three choices before buying anything else.

2) Does just putting a pipe on without tuning the bike different cause backfires? Also, the bike seems to be fouling the plugs. After a bunch of city riding the other day I noticed that it wanted to stall while idling.

3) Can I fit the new model hand guards on my bike?

4) I like the Motard look...the bike came with a dirt bike looking back fender. Will the Ulysses front fender fit on my bike?

5) The "lightning" cover plate on the right side of the engine is totally rattling. How easy is it to remove?

6) I wear big boots and want to adjust the rear brake lever further down but have bottomed it out because of the length of the bolt. How hard is it to pull the lever and cut off the bolt so I can adjust it further down?

7) There is an aftermarket hydraulic clutch on it. When I adjust the lever handle so it is comfortable it doesn't fully engage when pulled all the way to the grip. Where else other than on the lever can I adjust the clutch so I have less travel in the lever?

8) What does it take to get both headlights to stay on at the same time?

9) How much gas is left in the tank when the gas light goes on?

10) Do I really need to use the expensive gas like the manual says?

11) Can I remove the plastic belt cover that is at the rear of the bike? I have no rear pegs and don't need to protect a passenger's feet. I am assuming that is what it is for...although I guess it could be protecting the rider too from a belt break.

12) What type of light bulbs does the bike take? I want to replace them with higher power "off road legal only" bulbs and need to know what kind they are...I don't want to upgrade to HIDs yet.

13) I have heard that the Buell race exhaust, ecu and K&N kit is no longer available from the dealer. Is this true and if so are there any aftermarket companies that offer this type of kit?

thanks for any help you can give me. I am very excited to finally join the Buell family with a full size bike.

the jardine will give you about 105/110db
jardine + quiet insert, round 100/105db
race, 95/100db
stock, below 90db

my guess is that your stuffing is almost completely gone. inspect the jardine, see if it's loose...read more here (click)

you can remove them both, top, lower...it's all your choice. they are there to protect the belt from stones. most remove the upper but leave the lower on.

yes true, k&n is available from k&n, there are several aftermarket exhausts available (click) and if you can't find an ecm on ebay, there are other options (click)

1. All the pipe info can be found americansportbike.com

2. Yes it will cause it backfire due to a lean condition. You need to either remap you ECM or get a tuner of some sort.

3. Yes

4. No it will not fit.

5. Yes, just drill the rivets out and put new ones in.

6. Just remove it and thread the nut on and cut it to length that you need, careful not to take too much off.

7. Try CRG levers, not sure if they make them for that hydraulic set up.

8. You will have to re-wire it.

9. 0.7 gallons
