Hey folks! Im excited to join the community. Im less excited to find today a few spots on the base of the heads and the rear suspension that look like leakage. Can someone take a look and confirm what is going on? Im not to mechanically inclined, this is my 5th motorcycle. Ive done my own oil changes but this seems beyond me. Any advice will greatly help! Thanks! 20170504_124407.jpg20170504_124505.jpg20170504_124416.jpg20170504_124448.jpg

All of my photos flipped upside down sorry if it looks like ive inverted my bike!

Welcome !!

How many miles to you have on your bike ?

You can clean it all up, then watch were it is originates from. Hope it not your barrels base gaskets.

It looks like could your rear rocker box is leaking, Which is very common, rear cylinder gets hotter than the front, and cooks the rocker gaskets and then leaks down the rear cylinder and the fan does its part spreading it around.

^^^^ this

I'd do this first before sinking time and money into rotating the engine and replacing gaskets.

Its not horribly difficult, but if you don't feel comfortable doing it, you may want to see out a pro.

There is a thread on rotating the engine and I think someone on here made a youtube video about it at well. Replacing the gaskets should be pretty straightforward once you get access to them. There should be a plethora of info on the interwebs about rocker box and/or cylinder base gasket replacements as the motor is based on a Sportster motor. Check these out and see if you feel up to the task.

buellmods.com for a service manual download.

PS. Don't listen to Silverrider. (just kidding) :black_eyed:

Could the discoloration on the rear shock be from the leak in the base of the motor ?

Sure could! Especially since it's a rear cylinder leak and most likely getting oil all over the fan which then throws the oil all over the shock and out the back of the bike.

OP best to get it taken care of before you burn out the fan.

In the 3rd pic you can see the back of the fan and it appears dry, not oiling, If it was the rear rocker it would be oiled out. Barrel base gaskets ??? and bad shock seal ?? My quesstament. if that s a word LOL

Silverrider that is true, it's hard to tell exactly what is going on in those pictures. Best to clean the area up and check again to pinpoint the leak.

OP to see if your shock is done or not, back off the compression rings on the coil to the full soft setting then adjust the rebound screw (just above the lower shock bolt) to its slowest setting. Now compress the rear of the bike with your hands and let off. Adjust the rebound to the other end of its adjustment and do the same, how fast the bike comes back to rest should be very noticable on a good shock. If you need to repalace it, I've seen them go for $50-$60.

i bought it with the gas mask installed. this bike has seen two previous military owners. I think this bike was made to wear a gas mask.
