So, my son just picked up a fantastic 2006 XB12X. It has a small oil weep at this primary case bolt. Would Loctite 565 Thread Sealer work or am I going to have to replace the entire gasket?

It's not coming from the threads, they are blind.

The gaskets are re-usable (usually). If you don't want to replace it, just take off the cover add a little sealer on the gasket where its weeping, re-tighten to spec (NOT OVERTORQUED) and that should stop it.

Normally I fully agree with Cooter - but since it's a 'new-to-you' bike, I'd go with dawiz45 - just put new gaskets (all three of them) in.

Heck, replace the shifter shaft o-ring while you're at it!

Don't get me wrong fellas, replacing the gasket is a better choice. I assumed the obvious and my wording was suspect:upset: Good call Pushr0d, on the shifter shaft o-ring! Theres 2 sizes....

And with the primary off, a chain and clutch inspection would be prudent as well. If the OP is worried about a "small oil weep" from a Harley engine designed in the 50's, I hope he's the type to get all the maintenance done correctly:angel:

Since you're buying gaskets, its a good idea to get the two replacement cover gaskets. I believe the book says they are single use only, and I have come across several XB's that leak from them with copious amounts of RTV to try to seal them. New gaskets work every time, RTV doesnt.

I went ahead and got the whole gasket set. I've always been a metric rider (Yamaha Stratoliner currently) so any oil weeping messes with my mind. Haha.

I had an 08 Raider and then 2010 Stratoliner. That is one impressive Vtwin. Beautiful torque monster.

Truly is. I believe the numbers (after the Strat ECU flash and air mods) on HP and Torque are about the same. Except the Xb12x weighs nearly half as much.

Replaced the gaskets and no more oil weeping. Old gasket didn't look bad, so I added some sealer with the new gasket. However, the Clutch collar was frozen on the clutch shaft and broke. $40 at St. Paul and it's back running. I hate when an hour job turns into a couple days. :black_eyed:
